TENNIS COMPETITION.
WILLIAMS MEMORIAL SHIELD.
HOPAI V. HIKUTAIA.
The first challenge match of the present tennis season for the Howell Williams Memorial. Shield was played on Saturday last, when the Hopai club’s team journeyed to Hikutaia but failed to wrest the trophy from tne holders. Each team won 59 gamcis, but the odd set was secured by the Hikutaia team. Following are the detailp of the scores, Hopai players, being mentioned first: — ■ Men’s Singles^.—W. Murphy beat H. Morrison, 6—l ; S. Coppins beat G. Gibb, 6—4 ;D. Murphy beat C. Gibb, 6—3 ;G. Birkenhead lost to C. EJliot, 4—6.
Ladies’ Singles.—Mrs Speedy beat Miss G. Gibb, 7—5 ; Miss Castello lost to. Miss M. R. Gibb, (X—6.
Men’s Doubles —Murphy and Coppins beat Morrison and Gibb, 6—o ; Murphy and Birkenhead beat Gibb and Elliot, 6 —l; Coppins and Quintal lost to Elliot and Paetai, 5—7. Ladies’ Doubles. —Mrs Speedy and Miss Costello lost to the Misses Gibb, I—6 ; Mig Motion and Miss Wade lost to the Misses Elliot, 6—B. Combined Doubles.—Miss Wade and Quintal, lost to Miss Eil'liot and Elliot, 3—6 ; Mrs Motion and Coppins lost to Miss Elliot and Elliot, 3—6.
