NEW RAILWAY PORTERS.
’‘SEMI-OFFICIAL” MEN COMING. CONDITION OF WORK. The coming of the new semi-official railway porters announced by the Minister for Railways last session is brought nearer realisation by the gazetting of by-laws governing their employment. A license from the manager of the board is necessary before the “semi-official’’ porter, can ply for hire. No person so licensed can enter a carriage or railway premises for the purpose of removing any passenger’s luggage unless engaged by a passenger. No licensed porter will be deemed to be employed by the Railway Department, and the Government will not be liable for the acts< or defaults of any porter. The licenses can be transferred. The “semi-offiical” porter will be required to Wear the cap with badge as lettered and numbered, supplied him, and must observe all. the general railway by-laws. Each porter will be entitled to claim the following rates for hisi services, and no l more : (a) When a single article of luggage only has .to be trans-, ported, 6d ; (b) when there are more articles than one to be. transported: for each necessary trip on which the porter transports more than one of such articles to or from the cab, tram, vehicle, railway-carriage, parcelsoffice, or part of station directed or appointed, as the case may be.
