THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto : Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER, 27, 1925. OHINEMURI LICENSING.

In the New Zealand “Herald” on Monday appeared ,an interview with Mr A. S. Bankart with reference to the meeting held in Paeroa on Friday last. The report would lead readers to conclude that ,a committee had been set up. On making inquiry from some of those who were present,, it seems that this statement is incorrect. The local owners, in comirtbn with all thinking people, are naturally in favour of the ideal of the betterment of the trade generally, and to that extent are in favour 1 of considering means to- that end for the trade as a whole. The opinion of several owners interviewed is that they are not in favour of any isolated experiment. In fact, they say definitely that they will oppose, any scheme which would tend to tie .the houses. In reference to Mr Bankart’s statement that the matter had gone so far forward that committees had been set up for Waihi and Paeroa, this would lead the reader to believe that matters had come to the negotiation stage. This is not correct, and is emphatically denied. All that was done was to. make arrangements'whereby owners, interested in Waihi and Paeroa could be called together, to discizss, the matter with a view to endeavouring ,to find if there, is any workable basis upon which the proposals can be entertained. It is generally felt, however, that it is not timely to do anything until after the magisterial recount. The question of preferences'" that shall be considered under the Act would appear to be a matter of vital- Importance in deciding who are the owners interested.
