“IN HER HOUR OF NEED.”
AN IMMIGRATION APPEAL. OUR DUTY TO MOTHERLAND. - “The Old Country is calling on’us again. I appeal- to you to help her. Don’t let iis turn our backs on her in her hour of need.” In short, piquant sentences such as these an eloquent and telling appeal to the people of New Zealand to rally to the support of the Mother Country and help her out of her difficulties with regard to immigration was made by the Primate, Archbishop Averill, in-the course of his remarks at a dinner tendered nim at New Plymouth. ■ “I would like to say a few words about immigration,” Archbishop Averill said. “The Church of England is taking it up, and we in New Zealand are taking it up, but there is need of a bigger effort. I; know you in Taranaki have your own scheme under the Chamber of Commerce, and I am very proud of it. The Old Mother Country is in very greats need at the present-time. Each year there are 60,000 boys, receiving the dole as soon as they leave school. These boys must be given a chance in life. It is vital to them and to our Empire that they should be given a chance. . “When England called us. in her hour of need in 1914 our colonies rallied to her aid. To-day the Old. Mother Country is calling to us again to help her in this immigration. I appeal to you to put aside anything you, may bring against immigration. It is not to relieve unemployment, but to help the Mother Country. Of course we cannot take all. There must be proper selection, but do not let the difficulties in the way of immigration take away your sympathy with the Mother Country when she calls to her colonies to help her in this question. I appeal to you to help her. Don’t let us, turn our hack on the Mother Country in her hour of need.
