DEATH OF QUEEN MOTHER

SUCCUMBS TO HEART SEIZURE.

Shortly after 1.30 o’clock on Saturday afternoon the postmaster (Mr W. E. Ward) received official, notification from Wellington that] the Dowager Queen Alexandra had passed, away at York Cottage, Sandringham, in her 81st year.

Although the Queen Mother ha.d been in failing health for some time past it wats not until late on Friday morning that her condition became critical, following on a severe hcait seizure earlier in the morning. •On Saturday afternoon flags were observed flying at half-mast from the post office building and the Ohinemuri County Chambers, while yesterday the Public Works office flag and the Borough flag on Primrose Hill were also flown as a mark of respect.

• In the course of his sermon at St. Paul’s Church, Paeroa, yesterday, the Rev. F. B. Dobson referred feelingly to the great less, the Empire had sustained by the sudden death of the Queen Mother. He also referred to the beautiful characters and noble examples of the Empire’s last three reigning Queens, and special, prayers were offered for the Royal Family, and .the National Anthem was reverently sung at both morning and evening services.

Suitable reference was. also made at the local Presbyterian Church- last night by Pastor Clarke, while at the Methodist Church the Dead March was played by .the organist, Mr J. Rickard, at the conclusion of the service.

His Worship.: the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) advises that he has not received' official intimation from the Government at to what the period of mourning or other arrangements will be.
