AMALGAMATION SOUGHT.

HORAHIA AND HAURAKI BOARDS./ i COMMISSION AS BASIS. - The. first formal step in- the proposal to unite the Horahia and Hau- - : raki drainage areas under .the control of one board was taken by .the Horahia Board on Friday last, when a resolution was adopted expressing the opinion that amalgamation was deSir- , . able. ■ ■ ' ■ ■■ The matter came up for discussion when the conclusions arrived .at by the Hauraki Drainage Board in regard to the Horahia Drainage Board’s suggestions concerning dual drains, as . read at the recent ■ conference and publishd in the- "Gazette,” were read : by the clerk. " Mr J. m'.' Thompson said it wafi obvious that the Hauraki Board did not want to take ’the water from the Horahia area. Mr Murray said that the solution appeared to be to de-divide the two areas down the watershed, so that all the land draining to .the Waihou River Would be in the Hauraki drainage area and that land draining to the Piako would be in' the Horahia ■ drainage area. It was explained that to effect this - it would be necessary for the settlers concerned to, petition the Hauraki Board for admission. Mr Kneebone considered that the settlers referred to were not likely to do anything until .they knew if they . alone would have to foot the bill, for / the improvements necessary to the outlets. ‘ The matter was discussed in committee, and on standing orders being resumed Mr Hale moved: “That the Horahia Board considers that it is in the best interests of the district as a whole .that amalgamation take place with the Hauraki Drainage Board.” Seconded by Mr Murray, and carried. Mr Hale moved, and Mr Kneebone « seconded, that the recommendation of the board in committee be adopted in-. structing the clerk to write to the Hauraki Drainage Board asking it to favour amalgamation, the basis to be. ? settled by a commission.—Carried.
