BOROUGH FINANCE.
COUNCIL COMMITTEE’S REPORT. SLOW PAYMENT OF RATES. ' The following report was submitted to the Paeroa Borough Council by the Finance Committee at the council meeting last night:— “Your committee begs to report that during the month the revenue amounted to £1129 12s 6d and the expenditure to £1390 2s Bd, including the attached accounts recommenoed for payment. . ' “The balance in the district fund* account after ‘meeting the accounts presented for payment shows a debit of £541 10s Bd. There are amounts totalling £921 8s Od which hare been advanced to various loan -ac- * counts, so that the district fund ac-count-lias an actual credit of £379 17s 4d. “The balances, in .the various loan accounts are as follows: Street improvements loan-account, debit, £34'513s lOd ; sewerage loan account, debit/ £5668 Is 6d; domain improvements loan account, credit, £194 15s 7d; water loan account, ' .credit, £416 17s Bd. “The revenue from rates is coming in very-slowly, the worst feature being the small amount‘of arrears received. Out of a sum of over £l6OO * less than £3O has been paid in the laist four months, this month only £2 being received. With the present* position of the district fund it is apparent that some" drastic effort will have ta .be made to collect immediately these arrears, otherwise fresh overdraft arrangments will have to be made-with the bank in order that the. council will be able to carry on its ■ ordinary work. We therefore recommend that the towh clerk bei authorised to take immediate steps to recover these rates.’” , .
