■Wednesday next will be Armistice Day, the day upon wlhich. the Great War, with all the horrors and. misery which it brought in its train, was ended. His Majesty the King has again asked that we tshall pay a tribute of honour to the glorious dead who laid down their lives'in that war, by observing a ty’o-minutes period of .stillness and silence at 11 o’clock on the anniversary of the day upon which the Armistice was signed. At. St. Paul's Church the Litany will be said shortly before 11 o’clock, and all who wish to keep the silence in quiet and appropriate surroundings are cordially invited to be present.
Owing to the heavy rain and hail ( which fell on Saturday morning the official opening of Hie Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club had tb be postponed. The opening will now take place on Saturday, November 14.

As a result ,of the fire at 'the C«ntral Boardinghouse, Paerpa, early on Friday morning Mr Gillard states tnat it. has been necessary to shoo\ his favourite dog, -Hone, which was badly burnted when the stable caught alight.
Rather unseasonable weather was, experienced locally on Saturday morn • ing, when several heavy show*ers of rain fell, followed by a downpour of hail about 10 o’clock, after which the sky cleared and the remainder of the day was fine. Towards evening there was a decided drop in the temperature, and during the night several degrees 9f frost were recorded. Perfect weather prevailed yesterday, the brilliant sunshine making it one of the hottest days so far recorded this, season.
Apropos of the increase in the building trade and road work in Auckland there has been considerable activity in shipping on the Waihou River. During the past month there has been on an average two auxiliary scows, a week loading san<( for Auckland either at the Puke or in the lower reaches of the* river.
Two new shops have just been completed in Ngatea, and one .of them was opened this morning by a confectioner, fruiterer, and greengrocer. The other shop is not yet occupied, but there fe a chance of a chemist taking it. V Ngatea now has twelve shops and the remainder of the Plains twenty-one.
The Governor-General’s precedent consent lias been given ,to the Paeroa. Borough Council enabling it to borrow the sum of £2OOO for a term of 20 years for the purpose of erecting council chambers instead of a term of 3612 years, ats provided for under the Finance Act. The Minister for Finance, with the approval of the Governor-General, has also given his precedent consent to ,the council borrowing the sum of £4OOO, being a portion of a loan of £11,250 authorised to be raised for street improvements, for a term o| 20 years at a rate of interest not exceeding six per cent..
