THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1925. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Weather permitting, the official opening of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club will take place .tomorrow afternoon, at 2 o’clock. The patron (Mr W. Marshall.) will perforin the opening ceremony. A cordial invitation is extended to the publie to be present and take part in the proceedings.

Considerable indignation was expressed by Captain W. Moore of the Fire Brigade this morning at the action of a local resident driving his motor car over a lead of hose carrying water to the scene of the fire in Wharf Street. Apart from the damage that might easily have been done to the hose., and the consequent loss of time, which is of vital importance on such an occasion, the action of the driver was unwarranted. It should be the duty of citizens to assist rather than hamper the fine brigade, and it is understood that action will be taken against pensons committing a similar breach in the future.

In connection with the screening of the election results on Wednesday night the management of the “Gazette” wishes to sincerely .thank and record the appreciation of the services rendered by Mr W. E. Ward, postmaster,, and the .telegraph and exchange attendants at ■the Paeroa post office ; the registrar, Mr P. H. Wylde, and his staff, to whom congratulations are extended on the efficient manner in which their duties were carried out. Grateful thanks are also offered to the Rev. F. B. Dobson for the use of a lantern ; Messrs Robinson and Beagley, for timber ; and Messrs R. Mitchell, C. W. Malcolm, and J. Hubbard for the valuable services gratuitously given.

Guy Fawkes night was celebrated in the time-honoured style by the children in Paeroa last night. As soon as it was dark enough, large ..bon-fires were ligthed in various parte of the borough, the flames lighting up .the heavens for miles round while they lasted. The air reverberated with the explosions of crackers and other fireworks, mingled with the joyous shouts and hearty laughter of of the children as the night wore on. It was quite a late hour when the fires burned down and the last cracker was expended. Apparantly to many children the meaning of Guy Fawkes is somewhat overlooked, as the effigies which are “burned at the stake” on November 5 are more popularly known as “Kaiser Bills.”.

This week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” might be termed a special. Caulfield Cup number, as this important Australian race meeting is represented l in. a very generous set of striking photographs. The Waikato Hunt fixture will also be of keen interest, while the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting comets under particular notice of the photographer. The beautiful centre pages are arrayed with pictures of the Town Criers’ National Championship, Welsh Figeon Derby, and Devon fisherwomen. The ladies’ golf championship at Miramar is the subject of a splendid page, and the Prime Minister’s visit to the camp at St. Heller’s Bay is fea, tured in an excellent set of photographs. Amongst a noticeably attractive series of miscellaneous, illustrations are Labour Day sports in Auckland, the arrival of immigrants by tiie Corinthic. 2nd Argyll-Sutherland Military Band,, etc. Stage and motion picture an(l social happenings have their usual artistic representation, and a two-colour supplement, “Beautiful Legs,” should excite further admiration. j
