SALVATION ARMY.
UNITED BAND FESTIVAL. PAEROA MEMBERS COMMENDED. On Saturday, October 24, the localSalvation Army Band journeyed 'to Auckland to take part in a week-end united band festival in connection with Labour D.ay celebrations. The band discoursed music all along the line, and played on several, station platforms. On Saturday evening they, with some 140 other Salvation Army bandsmen, partook of a banquet in the Newton Citadel,' and later rendered praiseworthy items in the East Street Hall, where were gathered the Auckland City, Newton, Eden, Wliaugarei, Hamilton, and Auckland S.alvatioh Army Boys’ bands; The Paeroa band held its own open air services at 10 a.m. -in Waterloo Qu,adrant, at 2 p.m, in Pitt Street, and ,at 6 p.m. in Shortland Street:; arousing much interest and favourable comment.
The combined bands then paraded Queeji Street, and the great meeting in the packed Town Hall eclipsed the afternoon’s gathering in the Opera House, where the Paeroa band was publicly commended for its sweet music. The selection “Christmas Bells,” played in the Town Hall before the 3500 onlookers, proved that the smallest band on parade could produce, as faultless hai-mony as the larger combinations. Bandmaster E. Mar,tin had the honour ofl conducting the whole of the massed bands in the opening tune of the festival.
The bandsmen met their own travelling expenses, and they spent a most profitable and enjoyable weekend.
