OHINEMURI COUNTY.
WORKS OF THE MONTH. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report tor the month of October was submitted to a, meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council on Thursday last by the engineer, Mr E. Shaw :— “Proposals were sent forward to the Public Works Department tor the following works : Metalling 60% chains of Hamilton-Paeroa Road (main highway) a,t Waitoki; 31 chains of Pukewera Road, Waihi ; Ry.all’s Rbad, Paeroa ; and Farrelley’s Road, Waikino. Before any plans or specifications for metalling work subsidised by the Government 'can be approved it ; will be necessary for the council ,to. set aside, annually, a sum for maintenance of the proposed work, and a resolution of the council to that effect is necessary to accompany each proposal. All the above works are under subsidy of £ tor £. "In company with the chairman I interviewed Mr P, Baine, of the Tirbhia quarry, at Te Aroha; concerning the price of metal on the roadside at Tirohia, and satisfactory arrangements were made.
"In regard to fencing the quarry reserve at Komata, the matter was gone into, and I find that the lessee is not responsible for the fencing, and that the lease will expire on February .1, 1926. The council’s share of the repairs to the boundary topee would be approximately £2 Jss. “Junction Bridge, on the Golden Cross Road, Wai'tekauri, is in need of repairs—two • (stringers and an end pier are required. - . Also the footbridge over .the Ohinemuri River at Waikino needs a general, overhaul.: new suspension ropes are required, and the piers at each side of the river have decayed and will require to be strengthened] ' The suspension ropes for the swing bridge 1 have on hand. As the Telegraph Department is renewing the telegraph poles , to Waihi and is about to dispose of the old poles, I would ask the couhcilt's permission to purchase some of the most suitable ones for repairs to bridges, etc. The surfacemen can carry, out the necessary repairs' to the above bridges.” The engineer was authorised to carry out the repairs- as suggested, and authority was given to purchase the poles required. “I would ask the council’s permission to secure 50 cubic yards of metal tor repairs to the main road-in the vicinity of Tirohia. The unmetalled portion of this road, was graded up, but, unfortunately, wet weather came when it was completed, and to a great extent spoilt the work. The road roller will have completed its work at Tirohia this week for the time being. That portion of the road between the metal dump and the end of the metal at Hennah’s Hill is being left until the carting of the metal to Waitoki has been completed.”—Authority was granted. "During the month Brenan and Co., Ltd., started their contract raising the formation at Waitoki. Wet weather came on, wlhich.„made the filling very (soft, causing the travelling public much inconvenience in getting through.” Cr. P. Corbett took exception to the term “travelling public,” and asked how many of the county ratepayers had been stuck in the quagmire. --The engineer replied th,at the council’s chairman was the only one so far as he knew. Cr. Corbett remarked that it only bore out his previous argument that the road was Being improved for the benefit of the travelling public. “I would ask the council’s permission to put an extra surfaceman on in the Kaimanawa riding, as it is impossible to cope with the maintenance work required to be done with one man ; also that, a shanty be placed in a central position for the (surfaceman to live in. There is a hut at Karangahake and another at the abattoirs belonging to the. council which are not required there and could be removed for the purpose.” On the motion of Cr. Morrison, seconded by Cr. Robinson, the engineer was authorised to carry the recommendation into ..effect. ' • '
