THE DRAINAGE BOARDS.

CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. HAURAKI BOARD’S DECISION. Shortly after the constitution of the Horahia Drainage Board it was thought advisable for the .two drainage boards operating in adjacent areas to meet in conference so that a working agreement could be arrived at in connection with the drains that traversed the Hauraki area. A conference was held, but it proved abortive, and the decisions arrived at were later the subject of much acrimonious discussion, so that when later .the Horahia Board again asked for a conference the Hauraki Board requested a full statement in writing of the Horahia Board’s requests. A statement was sent, but one question, that of compensation, if any, to be given for the existing dual drains), was not answered. This fact was pointed out by the Hauraki Board, and at ite next meeting the Horahia Board passed a resolution expressing the opinicln that the amount of money proposed to be spent in the Hauraki area would be ample compensation for the drains taken over, and that the annual contribution for for maintenance must be a relief to the Hauraki Board. The clerk Was

also instructed to inform the Hauraki Board .that all the information asked for had been supplied. ’lhe following letter was written to the Hauraki Board, which considered it in committee at its October meeting : “In reply to yours of September 30, I am instructed to inform you that the estimates eent contained all the information asked for. The amount of money proposed to be spent by .the Horahia Board in the Hauraki Board’s area must surely be regarded as credit given your board in connection with the construction of the drains suggested. The credit given can be stated accurately by subtracting the amount the Hauraki Board is asked to contribute from the total estimated cost as well as an annual maintenance sum from the Horahia Board. In view of theise facts I shall be glad if the Hauraki Board would be prepared to now discuss the suggestions made in concrete form, so that a date could be arranged in the near future for a conference to crane to some decision on the issues involved.” ’ The decision of the Hauraki Board was that it would meet the Horahia Board in conference on Saturday, No*vember 7, at Turuai.
