KEREPEEHI ROADING.

PROPOSAL BEFORE RATEPAYERS. DECISIVE NEGATIVE VOTE. Ratepayers of the Kerepeehi riding turned down by 54 votes to 17 the road loan proposal fostered by the Ratepayers’ Association on which a poll was taken on Friday. The voting was as fololws :—

The proposal was to authorise the County Council to borrow the sum of £33,800 on the security of a rate of 6 41-5 d in ..the £ for the purpose of having the roads of the district improved and the township streets metalled. Much opposition to the loan was expected by the Ratepayers’- Association from the settlers of the Wharepoa and Kopuarahi road's, but it W'as thought, that the block vote of the township and a favourable vote from Pekapeka Road would overcome the opposition from the metal road settlers. However, the publication of the details and the rate must have set the farmers of thes whole district calculating their liability,, for it is.obvious that they voted solidly against the loan, and the only votes in favour were those of the small holders of tlie township.

The Pekapeka Road settlors# no doubt took into consideration the fact that the road past their door had been declared a main highway, and ,that the County Council.had a scheme of main roads which, if sanctioned by the would be a charge on tlie whole county, no matter whether the route of the highway was altered or not. A' section of them put up the argument that a very small loap would be required to provide for the .metalling of the outlet .towards Netherton.

Some of the settlers on Wliarepba Road expressed the opinion that their road could be maintained for very much less than the loan rate when the highway was through Pekapeka Road, and there would be practically no through traffic on Whareppa Road. The Ratepayers’ Association is not representative enough of the whole riding, the majority of its members being township settlens. It is suggested that the township should undertake its own burden.
