EFFORT FOR ST. MARY’S CHURCH.

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.

The efforts of .the congregation of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Paeroa, to reduce .the debt on the church building has .been receiving the earnest attention of members for some time past. As a means of raising further revenue a monster sale of work was commenced in the Gaiety Theatre on Wednesday afternoon, and was continued until last night, resulting in considerable success. Although the bazaar was open for the transaction of business' during Wednesday afternoon it was not until the evening that it was formally declared open by .time deputy-Mayor (Mr E. Edwards) in the absence of the Mayor. Mr Edwards congratulated all those who had Worked so assiduously in providing articles for sale, and specially commented On the skill and artistic abilities displayed in carrying out the decorations. He hoped the various stalls would be depleted of their stocks before, the conclusion of the bazaar, and assured those present that, from his observations, purchasers would receive full value for their money. After wishing the promoters exery succses Mr Edwards declared the bazaar open. The sale of work was well patronised during the afternoon sessions, as well as in the evenings, and a steady sale of goods was maintained. During the evening various competitions for handsome prizes .were held, and were entered into witli zest by young and old.

The following were, noticed among tlie stall-holders: Mesdames H. Poland G. H. Taylor, W. Bain, L. Mhy,. Misses C. Taylor, Carthy, and Gordon, plain and fancy work ; Mesdames Sherson, Berkhout, W. Lennon, Bertelsen, Misses Bertelsen, V. Charlesworth, and L. Lennon, sweets stall; Mesdames E. Shaw, E. Shaw (junr.), Miss M. Treanor and assistants, jumble stall, and tea-rooms.
