VALEDICTORY.
MR. LAWRENCE G. SMITH, A pleasing little ceremony took place at the Paeroa office of the Public Works Department on Friday afternoon last, when the office and field istaffs assembled to take formal farewell of Mr L. G. Smith, who has been associated with the department for nearly nine years, four of which have been spent in .the drafting-room at the local office. In the absence of the resident engineer (Mr L. May), Mr W. Barclay, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Smith with a set of draughtsman’s scales as a slight token of the high esteem in which he is held by his colleagues. In making the presentation Mr Barclay said that he had watched their guest’s progress with interest, and could not speak too highly of his integrity, cheerful disposition, and courteous manner. He wished Mr Smith health and happiness, and good luck and prosperity in his profession.
Mr Smith left Paeroa for Auckland on Monday to take up an appointment as draughtsman to the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board.
