THE PAEROA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Paeroa Borough Council ~met;:-s . ;i on Thursday evening last, .the Mayor f (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the following: Crs. E. A. Porritt, H. J. Hare, J. Pinder, F. E. Flatt, P. EBrenan, G. P- de Castro, J. W. Sil--cock, and E. Edwards, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander!. SPECIAL RATES. , The clerk of the Ohinemuri County Council wrote agreeing to .the payment of 7Y a per cent, for the collection of special rates. SCHOOL GROUND. The secretary of the Paeroa Dis- . trict High School Committee wrote - asking if the council would sell the municipal reserve in Nahum Street facing Wood Street. This property was desired for the extension of the playing area at the school. The Mayor stated that he and Cr. •. Brenan had obtained from the Min-, ister for Education a promise to take the land at £230. He moved that the council authorise the sale to the department for £230, and .that the pro- . ceeds be applied to the purchase of 3 acres 2 roods 37.6 perches contained in Rawhitiroa A No. 3 and 828 as a municipal reserve—Carried. HIGHWAY THROUGH BOROUGH. The resident engineer of the Public Works Department wrote stating that with reference to the request made by the borough for assistance from the Main Highways Board in connection with certain roads, in Paeroa Borough, the board had decided to. allow assistance to boroughs as from April 1, 1925. It was regretted that the application from the Mayor could not be acceded to. - _On the Mayor’s motion it was de- ■* cided to make application for the maintenance ■subsidy when possible. STREET LOAN. Tlie Minister for Finance wrote, consenting to the council paying a rate not exceeding 6 per cent. per. annum on £6250, being the balance of the street improvement loan of £ll,250. He also authorised the payment of interest at 6% per cent, on the amount to be borrowed from the Bank of New Zealand bn the security of a hypothecation of the debentures to be issued in respect of the balance of the loan. £6OOO AND £4OOO LOANS.

The Public Trustee wrote stating that the Office Investment Board had resolved to grant the loans of £6OOO and £4OOO applied for. Formal resolutions in connection with these loans were carried. LIBRARY SUBSIDIES. Mr Porritt suggested that the town clerk ascertain details Of the conditions under which a subsidy could be - obtained for' .the local library. A motion to that effect was ; carried. RAILWAY PLOT. Cr. de Castro suggested that the punga fence at .the garden plot near the old railway station be removed back to the edge of the footpath. The appearance ,of the locality would be greatly improved. He moved that it be a recommendation to the Works Committee to go into the matter. Cr. Flatt seconded pro forma. Cr. Edwards thought that the mat- . ter could be dealt with at once. The area had been inspected and the present design approved. It should not be altered, though the appearance of the fence could be improved. Cr. Silcock opposed the recommen-. dation. Cr. Flatt said that .the road could not be widened. The motion was lost. MAYOR’S HONORARIUM. Cr. Brenan said that he had recently been approached by a member of the Salvation Army for a donation. It had occurred to him that the Mayor would also be approached, and he therefore moved that his- honorarium be paid. In seconding Cr. de Castro said, he was sorry ’that the amount cbuld not be raised. MOTOR REGULATIONS. As so many circular letters were received by the council concerning proposed regulations and amendments of the various motor regulations under the numerous Acts, and they were usually of such a lengthy nature, the council dicided to appoint a committee, comprising the Mayor and Crs. Brenan and Porritt, to deal with them instead of the whole council. ACCESS TO ROAD. A petition from 57 residents of Junction Road, George Street, Dearie Street, and Puke Road area praying for access to Belmont Road from Junction Road across the railway property was declined for *he reason that crossings existed 20 chains apart, nothing had happened to make an access necessary, a subway was. impossbile and an overhead footbridge impracticable, a level crossing at least three chains long was undesirable, and it was only the policy of ' the council to make reasonable requests to the depatrment. 1 WATER MAINS. After considering the matter in committee it was decided that the work of laying the 4in water pipes be proceeded with by the council employees. On Cr. Brenan’s motion it was decided that the Works Committee go into .the matter of replacing the 2in water mains to the racecourse and in Russell with 4in mains.
