TURUA TOWN BOARD.

REGULAR MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Turua Town Board w.as he|d on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Mules presiding over the following: Messrs S. G. Williams, J. H. Johnston, F. Olsen, A. C. Scott, J. T» Davies, and the clerk, Mr J. E. Green. DAMAGE IN PUNTING. The Thames County Council wrote advising that the board would be held responsible for any damage that might be caused to the Kauaeranga bridge through any of the punts used to convey metal to Turua for the board coming in contact with the ■structure. The clerk reported having replied stating that the board was not operating’any punts, on the river. BAND INSTRUMENTS. The secretary of the Turua Brass Band wrote asking that the board become the trustees of its instruments. On the motion of Mr Williams it was agreed to become trustees on conditions to be formulated by the clerk. RARATUNA STREET. Mr A. Walker wrote on behalf of the residents of Raratuna Street drawing attention to the extremely wet and unhealthy conditions, under which they had to live on account of there being no means of draining their sections or disposing of household waste water other than, in some cases, the roadside drain, which for many years had not been cleaned. Members advocated approaching the Drainage Board, as it collected rates amounting to 5s 4d from each of the sections. It was pointed out that the drain could be made a first-class' outlet. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, who represented the area on the Drainage Board.. FACTORY CORNER. The Works Committee was, authorised to have certain work done at the factory corner to protect the edge of the bitumen road. REPAIRS TO FOOTPATH. The chairman reported .having endeavoured to secure a punt-load of metal chips from the Kauaei’anga quarry for the repairing of the footpaths. The matter was left in the hands of the works committee. STREET LIGHTING. . In regard to the street lighting the clerk reported that the rate demands for the street lighting would be posted in the morning. The rate would produce sufficient to meet the full liability of a year’s lighting. Mr Johnston said that it was absurd to retain all the lights. Some of them should be cut out ' Members observed that it would be hard to reduce the street lights, and at the same .time strike a rate. The clerk pointed out that if any alteration was made the Power Boand would require a guarantee to retain the lighte for five years. There were at present fifteen 100 c.p. street lamps and they were being - maintained by the Power Board.

The matter was discussed at length, several motions being moved and withdrawn. Finally it was agreed that the number of (street lamps be reduced to eleven, by having those near the Willow drain, saleyards, McLean’s, and the stables removed. MAIN; ROAD FORMATION. In reply to Mr Johnston the chairr man stated that .the work of trimming up the main street and: forming the camber to the kerbing would be completed within a day or two. HEAVY TRAFFIC. The chairman brought up the ques-

tion of restricting the loads of road; metal over the board’s roads in ■ It was pointed out that .the contractors would probably use: Fordtrucks. This would not- cause damage to tlie extent of that of the fastmoving iron-tyred-drays. ? It was decided to watch the results.' NOVEMBER MEETING.
