MASSEY MEMORIAL.

LOCAL CONTRIBUTIONS. A POOR RESPONSE MADE. The town clerk (Mr W. C. Aelxander) reported at Thursday’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that the results obtained by the subscription lists issued in this district for donations towards the erection of a memorial to the late Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey amounted to £ll 16s, made up as follows.: Hikutaia Sale, per Mr A. S. Steedman, £5 12s; Paeroa school children, £2 10s; Paeroa Borough Council, £2 9s; W. D. Nicholas, Ltd., £1; National Bank, ss. The money and lists have been forwarded to the Auckland committee. In commenting on the response Cr. Flatt said he understood that the Government intended to vote a sum from the Consolidated Fund sufficient for .the purpose of erecting a suitable memorial. The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) stated that it was a pity a more liberal response had not been received, and he thought a mistake had bene made in not specifying a minimum contribution from the public. A councillor remarked that he had read of some districts where nothing had been collected. He did not think Paeroa had done so badly- in collecting the sum mentioned. A sum of £1 was also collected and forwarded, by the Ohinemuri County Council.
