Dr J. Bdginton, of Christchurch, has taken up duty as assistant housesurgeon at the Thames Hospital.
On Saturday next at Ngatea the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union’s representative team will play the Thanies Union’s representative team in the annual home and home miitch.
The Paeroa Borough Council meeting which was to have been held on Thursday evening last and which was postponed on account of the illness of the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall), will now be held to-morrow afternoon at four o’clock.
On Monday evening fourteen members of the local Orphans’ Club paid a visit to the Te Aroha club and assisted with the musical portion of the programme. The local members who contributed iterils were Bros. E. Edwards, W. Bottomley, C. E. Andrews, R. Foster, and B. Dunlap. The visit was thoroughly enjoyed by the visiting brethren.
Speaking of the progress of the maternity annexe at Thames at the Hospital Board’s meeting on Monday, Mr J. ,W. Danby said that in conversation with the matron he had learned that matters were proceeding satisfactorily at the institution. “But,” he said smilingly, turning to Mr.P. E. Brenan, “I am told that inmates from Paeroa are few and far between.” Mr Brenan replied thta that might be sb, but added, “wait until after next election and we get Restoration.” (Laughter.)
In commenting favourably on the earnest endeavour made by the secretary to collect overdue fees from patients a member stated at Monday’s meeting* of the Thames Hospital Board that the people of his district had contributed a sum of about £27 towards .assisting a young man who had met with an accident to pay his hospital account of £26-odd. To this the secretary replied that not a penny of the money had been paid to the board by the ex-patient. It was, decided to press for immediate payment.
The installation of electric light at the present Paeroa post office and postmaster’s residence has been completed by the Public Works Department, and the lights were switched on far the first item last night. In addition to a light in the private box lobby there are six lights in the main office. After many months of working under difficulties with the aid of kerosene lamps and a Wizard lighting plant, which was never satisfactory, the postal staff appreciate the improved facilities. So far as the residence is concerned, the postmaster expresses himself as well satisfied with the welcome change in the lighting arrangements.
