THAMES HOSPITAL

MONTHLY MEETING OF HOARD. The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held at Thames on Monday, the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) presiding over the following: Messrs W. J. Hall, G. Death, A. R. Robinson, P. E. Brenan, H. L. Berngy, J. Lange, J. Rowe, J. W. Danby, C. W. Kennedy, and the secretary (Mr G. Tbnge). LOAN MONEY. The Bank of New Zeaalnd wrote with reference to the board’s application for £7OOO for the purpose of erecting an isolation ward and laundry, and advised taht it would be necessary to lodge debentures as security for the overdraft. There should be ten debentures of £7OO each, payable ten yeans hence, rate of interest 6% per cent., supported by the board’s undertaking to levy on contributing local bodies for ah amount sufficient with the relative subsidy to produce £7OO each year for the ensuing ten years, and consent of the Minister for Health to t'he board borrowing and giving the required security. The chairman said that the bank’s proposition was better than the one offered by the Public Trustee, and he moved that the offer be accepted and F the secretary take the necessary stepjs to raise the-money. Seconded by Mr Lange and carried. In reply to Mr Brenan the secretary said that there were no objections by the contributing local bodies to the Public Trustee’s offer to loan £lO,OOO. The only objections were that the estimates for the buildings, were too high. Mr Danby suggested that a committee be set up to go further into details and finalise matters in connection with the proposed buildings. . The following committee was set up : The chairman, Messrs . Danby, Rowe, Lange, and Brenan. In reply to Mr Kennedy the chairman said that the department would .supply the architect and call tenders, for both buildings. GIFTS OF BOOKS. The Thames Borough Council wrote in reply to the request,-for any books —of no further use to the public library for the inmates of the district homes, and stated that the council would be pleased to refer the-matter to a library committee to ascertain if there were any such books available. . - Mr Danby reported that he had received a gift of forty books from Mrs Steedman, Paraw.ai. The gift was accepted with thanks. K SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS. The Thames Borough Council wrote advising that the sewerage was now ready for connection and requesting the board to connect up within 21 days. The secretary intimated that a plan of the work had to accompany the application. (. Mr Danby suggested that the advice of the health inspector be sought before calling tenders for the work.— Agreed to. VACANCIES IN SANATORIA. The Health Department, advised that there were 66 vacant beds at the ' Pukeora Sanatorium, and 42 beds at Queen Mary Hospital, ’ Hamner Springs. 1 . - WAIHI DEPUTATION.'

The Waihi Hospital Board wrote .asking the Thames Board to receive a deputation to discuss; hospital matters. ' , The secretary intimated that he had since received advice that the deputation could not attend the meeting .—that day. The Waihi Board also wrote advising that it could not .accept the first contained in the Thames Board's letter of July but was prepared to accept the second one. With reference to the proposed conference on the 14th ins.t„ that day was not suitable to the'Waihi Board, but some future date would be acceptable. The chairman said he did not se.e that the Thames Board could dp any more to help the Waihi Board, but he would welcome a conference at which matters pould be fully discussed. . In reply to Mr Danby the chairman said that patients from outside the Waihi Board’s district would to pay 9s a day. The patients admitted from the Thames district to the Waihi Hospital since the date of. termination of the agreement (July 13) had been . certified to as urgent caees. - The Waihi Board apparently made no effort to collect fees on behalf of the Thames district patients. Tnere ■would be difficulty in collecting from up-country patients. . , . Mr Danby. thought that patients going to Waihi should be charged in a •separate manner, from those receiving ' treatment at Thames. The chairman said that the secretary was doing everything in his power to collect all outstanding fees. RESIGNATION. , Dr. F. R. Smale wrote resigning his. position as assistant house surgeon to take effect as from September 15.— Accepted with regret. 0 ' Mr Death said he did not favour such short terms of service'. Appointments should be held for at least two - years. \ The chairman agreed that the position was unsatisfactory, but-he did not think it could be helped. Mr Danby drew attention to the fact that it had been estimated that jn two years’ time it would be a difficult matter to otbain a young doctor for the smaller institutions, in view of .the big salaries and experience to be had in the cities. Mr Lange supported that opinion. The chairman remarked that the board could face the position when it arose. . PROMOTION DESIRED. Nur.se C. E. Hill applied, in view of . her having passed the State examniaS tion, for further experience in the maternity annexe. —Referred to Nurses Committee. transfer SOUGHT. Nurse B. Claxtoni applied for leave c.f absence to enable her to take a course of training at St. Helen’s, Auckland. If the leave could be

granted an undertaking would be given by the applicant to return t<r Thames and complete her training at the hospital, > The chairman said that seven months’ leave was required ,and after consultation with the matron he favoured the leave being granted.— Agreed to. EXTERMINATING COCKROACHES. Mr J. M.'Malcuis, who undertook to eradicate the cockroaches at both institutions some months ago, wrote stating that he would return to Thames to continue the work at an early date. PAYMENT OF. ACCOUNT. An ex-patient, a resident of Parawai, forwarded- £2 on account of fees owing, and in a post-script stated, “please pajj' more attention to those who make no endeavour whatever. The chairman said that the account was six years old, and when he had seen the postscript he instructed the secretary to take action to recover the balance due. The debo.tr was in a position to pay the account. The action of the chairman and secretary was endorsed. REQUEST FOR DONATION. The Hauraki Ladies’ Benevolent Society forawrded accounts to date and asked for a cheque for £l5 — Granted. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £1177 6s 8d were passed for payment. HEALTH v INSPECTOR. In reply to Mr Brenan the chaiiman said that the health inspector was not under the jurisdiction of the Hospital Board. COMMITTEES. The following committees for the current month were ;set up: District Homes, Messrs Berney and Kennedy ; Hospital, Messrs Lange and Hall.
