FOOTBALL.

GAMES AT PAEROA.

LAST SATURDAY’S PLAY. Fine weather prevailed locally for sport on Saturday, but owing to coun-ter-attractions the attendance of the public at the Racecourse was very small. The principal game of local interest was the fin&l match this season for the Sharebrokers’ Cup, which wats played between junior representatives- of the Piako and Paeroa unions. Tiie game, which wasi played on the No: 2 ground, was open and fairly fast, tlic spectators being treated to a very fair exhibition of Rugby. On the whole breaches were few, and the

combination seen in both teams was of a very fair standard. For the first three rounds the home team was practically c-n the attack continuously, and should have nearly doubled the score, but owing to over-eagerness and the action of some players holdihg on to the ball too long several chances were lost. Paeroa scored 11 pointe during the first quarter, but did not increase that number during the rest of the game. The home team showed considerable im-

,■ provement in tackling. 1 The visiting backs played a solid game, and kept play very open. The forwards were a very even lot, and appeared to gain many advantages by keeping their places and anticipating the play. _ Following were the teams:—

Piako.—Mace, Heathcote, Lipsey, Roach, Munro, Pilkington, Tremaine, Miller, Emmett. Keeney, Lecce, Hubert, Campie, Hubert, Slack. Paeroa. —J- Mead, G. Wells, R. Swann, J. Verran, R. Mead, J. Rackham, A. Hardman, L. Potter, Duncan, MceLod, Scanlon, J. O’Brien, G. Morrison, Dawson, C. Treanor, Piako kicked off and carried up the line to near Paeroa’s twenty-five. The ball was returned by Morrison, who made a good run before, passing to Scanlon, to Wells, the latter putting in a nippy run .and diving over the line near the corner. Swann failed to convert. Paeroa 3, Piako O'. From the drop-out Paeroa continued to attack, and in attempting to clear a Piako player was penalised. Swann’s kick was blocked. From a mark near the twenty-five line Treanor took a drop-kick, but the ball fell short and was returned by. Tremaine. The home team kept up the.pressure, and a,long cross-kick by Swann. was taken on the full by Morrison, who scored a good try which Wells failed to ccnvert. Paeroa 6, Piako 0. Paeroa resumed the attack and Rackham manced, but his kick fell short. Temporary relief- was given the visitors by a free kick, but McLeod shoitly afterwards returned to the corner, where a scrum was ordered. In the scramble that followed Duncan .picked i up and scored, Hardman kicking a good goal. Paeroa 11, Piako 0. After the change-over Piako went on’the attack for. a spell,, and as .a result of Hardman holding on to the ball Campie kicked a good goal. Paeroa 1.1, Piako 3. Verran carried up the line before transferring to Swann, a scrum resulting .in front of the posts. The home team hooked well, but selfish play by Hardman spoiled a likely iscore, Tremaine clearing to neutral ground. A kicking bout resulted in play working into Piako’s twenty-five, and a forward rush by Paeroa compelled the visitors /to . force. . The second half opened with Paeroa. still aggressive, and play was.carried to hear Piako’s corner, a free , kick bringing relief. During a loose forward rush the visitors reached the otheri twenty-five, where Roach-gain-ed possession and, beating the fullback, scored between the postts. Campie converted. Paeroa. 11, Piako 8. 1 During the last quarter the visitors got busy and gave the home team an exciting time defending. Play was gradually carried down field, and in a ragged scramble Munro picked up smartly and carried over the line. • Campie failed to convert. Paeroa 11. Piako 11. Give and take play followed until the call of time, and the game , ended with play in midfield without any further score being-add- -- ed. Mr R. B. Penlington was referee. Possibly the pick of the home backs were Swann, Wells, and Hardman, while conspicuous in the forwards were Morrison, Scanlon, and Duncan. The .outstanding backs in the visiting team were Roach, Tremaine, Munro, and Lipsey. J. Hubert and Campie were always prominent in the lOrward division. ■ ■ ' THIRD-GRADE. The curtain-raiser to the junior match was a representative thirdgrade match between Paeroa and Piako. The game was fast and interesting throughout. -The visitors displayed plenty yof combination and good judgment, and had little difficulty in defeating the Paeroa lads by 12 points to 3. The local team played a hard game, but appeared to be loathe to tackle seriously, and were rather tslow at following up. Following were the teams :— Piako.—Munro, C. Stewart, K. Hill, A. Mace, McGuire, Lipsey, G. Goodfellow, Green, F. Goodfellow, W. Tye, J. Tye, A. Haddon, R. Lipsey, Blackford, Mikkelsen. Paeroa. —Sinnct, Harold, Craig. Palmer. F. Barakat, Leach, Rowe, Gwilliam, A. Flatt, Hall, W. Spinks, P. Williams, Gunn, Robinson, Hargreaves. For the visitors, tries were scored by Stewart, Munro (2), and Lipsey. The only score for Paeroa was a penalty kick by W. Leach. Mr F. Pivott was. referee.
