A NATIONAL TRADE-MARK

THE BRANDING OF PRODUCE. SUPPORT FROM AUCKLAND. The desirability of a Dominion trade-mark for all New Zealand produce was discussed by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. A letter was received ftom the Associated Chambers- of Commerce stating that representations had been made to the Minister for Industries and Commerce. It was desirable to identify New Zealand produce whenever possible, and the executive had recommended that the letters N.Z. could with safety be added in all cases, and that where possible the design of the fern leaf should also be included. The Minister and the department viewed the matter favourably, but desired to know the opinion of the chief exporters.

A member suggested that it would only do harm if the mark was placed on bad or indifferent produce. The chairman, Mr A. A. Martin, replied that no bad or indifferent produce was allowed to be exported. The idea underlying the suggestion was, he said, an excellent one. Members agreed with this view, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Export and Shipping Committee.
