GAME AGAINST WAIHOU. WIN FOR KEREPEEHI. Last Saturday the Waihou Soccef team visited Kerepeehi, and a good exhibition of the code was given. Having won the toss, Waihou elected to play-with the sun behind them, and -.very, soon let the home team know they were up against a stiff proposition. The ball travelled quickly from end to end of the field. Cal lendar, the ‘ home 'full-back, rose to the occasion, and ably assisted by the half-back line, tho visitors were held well in check. After twenty minutes’ play Craig, the home inside-right, took a pot at go.ali, and McKinstry, in clearing his lines, got his foot too far under the ball, which caused it to glance into his own goal. This was hard luck for Waihou, as McKinstry was playing a slaving game. During a scramble in the Kerepeehi goal McKinstry received aiid promptly gbaled with a shot that' struck under the crossbar anil gave: Beagle no chance. After hard and -fast play Tilbury nearly scored a beautiful high shot, and Shilton, getting his head to a cross from.. Hands, gave the goalkeeper a surprise, but the ball was eventuulfy? cleared.
On -resuming after’ half-time each side., strove hard for the winning goali, and both goals were visited on Numerous occasions. : During one of tliese raids' a shot came in from Kerepeehi’s right, and Shilton, ■ bustling the.- goalkeeper, gave Craig a nice opening which he quickly took advantage of and scored Kerepeehi’s seepnd goal. After this Waihou strived hard, McKinstry going up half and Dickson going but Callendair relieved witlii some good kicks and Kerepeehii eventually ran but winners by 2 goals to 1.
For Waihou Cooper had no chance with the goals scored against him. The'’two full-backs, McKinstry ' and
Lewis, seemed.-to shine, out well, and both played a great game. ''They were ably assisted by Dickson at half. The forwards were a good line, but appeared to spoil their chances by overeagerness.
For l the home team Beagle in goal had no chance with the goal scored against him. Callendar played his best game of the season at full-back, and it would be foolish to change his position. Collinson at left back was rather weak, which caused more work for Tilbury, who seemed to revel in it. Buswell and Thompson at half played sound football, and again verified what a good half-back line the team has. Hands and Craig on the right wing combined well together and swung the ball into the centre more often than in previous matches. Shilton at centre opened the game out and kept his wings going. Carson at inside left played a gool game, parting with the ball quicker, which made his play more effective. Burt outside left played a. great game in the first half, travelling with the ball, but received a nasty bump which made him less dangerous during the last spell. Altogether the team has made considerable improvement, and with Garrett in the team it should be very hard tb beat. Mr Dick Shilton was referee.
