THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1925. THE RECENT POLL.
That the progressive civic spirit prevails in Paeroa was evidenced in no uncertain maamer by the polling of the ratepayers on Wednesday, when they were called upon to authorise the Borough Council to raise a loan of £2OOO for the purpose of erecting suitable office accommodation for housing the borough staff and records. It must be. particularly gratifying to His Worship the Mayor and the majority of the councillors to know that the proposal was carried by over a three to one majority, and was the largest poll yet held on loan proposals in the history of Paeroa. The result puts in the background the division which existed in the Council, and is an indication of the true public spirit. Henceforth there will be no room in this town for those Who are not prepared to put their shoulders to the wheel and support progressive measures. Definitely that phase of the town’s progress is behind us, and we have now entered a new era when the people believe in the progress of the borough and are willing to shoulder the responsibilities attendant on developing the town on sound lines. So long as this phase prevails Paeroa must go ahead. There is nothing wrong with the place, geographically •situated as it is in the centre of one of the greatest dairying distirets in the Dominion, and being a navigation head, and destined to be one of the most important railway junctions in New Zealand. To a very large extent lack of confidence on the part bf the ratepayers hi their town has been a contributing factor in retarding progress, but happily that has now been overcome, and it is with a feeling of confidence and optimism that we should look forward to the future of Paeroa. Mere talk does not mean progress, and it is earnestly
hoped that the public will maintain the whole-hearted spirit of progress and intelligent interest in the welfare of the borough. To His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) and' his colleagues we offer our congratulations on the success of their latest progressive measure, and we warmly commend the ratepayers on the progressive spirit so definitely shown per medium bf the ballot-box on Wednesday. With the support and co-opera-tion of the ratepayers behind it the Council should have little difficulty in slowly but surely placing bur town in a position second to none of its size in the Dominion.
