TURUA TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The regular meeting of the Turua Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Mules presiding over Messrs. J. T. Davies, C. Scott, F. Olsen, J. H. Johnston, S. G. Williams, J. McConnell, and the Clerk (Mr J. E. Green). STRIKING OF RATES. The formal resolutions striking the general rate of l%tl in the £, and %d in the £ on the capital value for the street lighting, were moved by the chairman and carried. The rate of %d. in the £ was equal to 4d. in the £ on the annual value as was stated in the notice of intention to levy the rate. ..TOWN HALL LOAN. In regard to the Board’s application tor the Bank of Australasia, Te Arolia, for a loan of £3500 for the town hall, the chairman reported that the Bank Manager had made .an appointment to interview the chairman apd clerk, but later had telephoned cancelling the appointment on account of illness. The chairman said that he had been approached by a group of settlers with a proposition. The clerk would explain it. ■ The clerk suggested that the Board write to ten or twelve influential men in the district and invite their assistance and co-operation in the proposal to finance a public hall.. ■ A meeting could be held and the question of establishing the hall by borrowing an overdraft,' guaranteed by settlers, discussed. A sum would have to be deposited to pay for the land, and to pay wages and a deposit on the material. Continuing, Mr. Green pointed out that the saleyard's, concrete road, Turua Buildings, tennis courts, and other things had been financed "m the scheme suggested for the town hall. Mr Williams commended the suggestion. • The chairman said that no stone had been left unturned to raise the loan. Had it been lifted when put on •the market the building would now have been erected. The question of reducing the cost of the building was- discussed briefly, but it was pointed out that the design and cost of the porposed building was decided by a public meeting of rater payers. It was agreed that a meeting be held on Wednesday next to discuss the proposal, and a list of men likely to take an interset in the matter was . drawn up for. invitation. In reply to Mr. Davies, the clerk said that the board’s proposal to.raise a laon was not abandoned by the invitation to the general public to take it up. The public might not agree to shoulder the burden though favouring the hall, and in that case the board should continue to endeavour to raise the loan.
AH members agreed that the cost of the hall as originally proposed was more than was warranted. There was little chance of the revenue meeting the interest and sinking fund on the full loan of £3500, and ,a rate would be necessary. ROAD SUBSIDY. The Hauraki Plains county clerk forwarded a cheque for £249, being the subsidy received from the Public Works Department on that part of Hauraki-Road construction, north of the post office. The clerk reported having forwarded the cheque to the N.Z. Roads Co. In reply tp'Mr Williams the clerk said that nothing more had been heard of the 5s in the £ subsidy. The board had the Pion. J...G. Coates’, letter and could expect to see the subsidy on next year’s estimates. ROAD WORK. The chairman reported that the footpaths had been attended to- and metal chips spread on them. The works committee had approved of the grading of Miss Torr’s road between Hauraki Road and Oparia' Road wnen weather permitted. It was decided that the works committee attend to the repairing’and patching of certain Of the roads, including Waihou Street and Oparia Street. STRAYING STOCK. . The menace of straying stock oh the roads was mentioned' by Mr F. Olsen. ‘ ‘ . • The chairman. stated ; that .he had communicated with the inspector and had beetin authorised ’to employ a man to .take any. stock;,to tfie pound. Mr Olsen said he wottld endeavour to get a man. It shoulld not be difficult, as- a small fortune could be made. In addition the,man would get 2s 6d from the Drainage Board and 2s 6d from the Town Board for every beast impounded from Turua.
