COUNTY WORKS.
PROGRESS FOR THE MONTH. The following report for the month (Mr E. Shaw) at Thursday’s meeting of July was submitted by the engineer of the Ohinemuri County Council:— “The following works have been laid off on the Waihi,Plains, and sent for approval: Metalling portion of Ford Road, under subsidy £lOO, £ for £, Trig Road, free. The bridge over the Mangakiri Stream on the Old Tauranga Road has been completed. This bridge was seriously damaged in the late floods. An extension of 12 feet has been made so as to provide a greater clearance in flood time. The deepening of 80 chains of Komata North Road drain was let. by a tender at 10s. a chain.
"The scarifying and rolling of the main road between Waikino and the Waihi borough boundary has been completed by the Waihi Borough plant. During the progress of this work the weather conditions were very unfavourable for making a good job of it. “The scarifying of that portipn of the main highway between Mangaiti and TeAroha Borough is being porceeded with, but owing to the unfavourable weather conditions the progress is, slow. “A list of accrued thirds for the half-year ending 31st March, 1925, came tp hand, and a scheme for the expenditure of same was forwarded for approval. “All clay roads within the county are in a very bad state, and it is useless to try to do anything to them until the weather improves,. Other roads are being patched with metal where required. “Concerning the metalling pf Ham-ilton-Paeroa main highway at Waitoki, if it is the intention of the Council to carry out this work this summer, it will be necessary to. have tne metal stacked on hand at the roadside in readiness to have same carted on to the site at the proper time. As tnisi. is a slack’time of the year for t-he quarries the metal is now available at Tiroiha, which is the nearest point from which metal can be obtained for the proposed work.
“At the invitation of Messrs Jones and Hamilton, representatives of Messrs Parker and Lamb, Auckland, I met them at Maratoto in regard to carting timber in this county over that portion of Maratoto Road between the boundary of the Thames County and the Waipaheke Stream, a distance of two miles. They desired to know under what conditions the council would permit of carting on the road. It is not their intention to do this carting during winter months. They offered to put the ro*ad in order, to strengthen all bridges and culverts, and undertook to make good any special damage done by' their carting, also to pay a royalty of Id per mile per 100 superficial feet on all tiinber carried.
"In company with the chairman and the riding member (Cr. P. Corbett) I set out on the 13th ultimo for the purpose ,of making an inspection of, the roads in the Waihi riding and to interview Mr Goodwin concerning the road to Mr A. Davidson’s section, but owing to the bad weather the tiffi had to be abandoned. Later another attempt was made, but the same weather conditions prevailed. During the month an attempt was also made with the chairman and Cr. Morgan to inspect the roads in the Waikino riding, but with the exception of seeing Wa.'tawheta Road, which is in a. very bad state, no other roads were visited on account of the weather.” The report was approved.
