NGATEA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Ngatea District High School Committee was held on Friday evening, Mr W. McDuff presiding over Mrs Anderson, Mr C. S. Foster, and the Rev, E. H. Brooker (secretary). MOTOR TRANSPORTATION. A circular letter was received from the Education Board seeking information in regard to the motorbus for the transportation of children and the license fee payable. The secretary reported having replied. DENTAL CLINIC. The Education Board advised tnat it had asked the Education Department to approve of the dental clinic. A memo from the department to the board was forwarded for the committee’s information. It acknowledged receipt of the request to authorise two-thirds of the cost of the clinic. The committee should not have Pi’Oceeded without the requisite authority, although possibly it was 'not altogether to blame in view of the communication from the Director of Dental Hygiene. If the Dental Department regarded the room as satisfactory the matter of a grant in aid would be considered, but the committee must undertake- to. alter the room if necessary to meet dental requirements. The Director of Dental Hygiene had been asked to report on the suitability of the building. Mr Foster urged that the Dental ’Department, be.-asked to. approve of the building as soon as possible, so that the Government grant could be lifted. Unless this was done the committee would have to take steps to raise money. The secretary reported having read in a daily paper that no more dental clinics would be established ..until more nurses became available, and that would not be until March or April next year. . It was pointed out that the building had already cost £77, and £63 was required to complete it up to the specifications. The building had been let for one half-day a. week to a visiting dentist and'the rent was sufficient to—pay interest on the cost. 'ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £2 5s were passed for payment. . HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster, Mr N. J. Crabbe, in his monthly report mentioned that the roll numbers were : Primary, 128 ; secondary, 18average attendances for the quarter, 114 and 16.5, respectivly. During the month, the upper primary classes had subscribed for a small reference library, and- this money had been sent to the Education Board. It was understood that the committee had a. sum of money in hand for a high echool library, and it was suggested that the subsidy be obtained and the “Children’s Encyclopaedia" purchased. The report w.as adopted, and the secretary wasl instructed to interview the schoolmaster and. arrange how the money in hand should be spent. GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. In connection with the proposal to effect improvements to the playground, it was left to the chairman to arrange to have certain levelling done during the school holidays next month provided the weather was suitable. . HIGH SCHOOL. Mr C. S. Foster urged that the committee should take steps to increase the roll number of the high senool, as unless the average attendance was maintained at a higher number than in the past there was a chance of tne branch being closed. Once that happened it Would be very many years before another high school would he established on the Plains. The matter was bne that should be kept well, before parents at -all times, so that they could decide before the end of the year whether their children should leave school or continue in the secondary department.
