PAEROA RUGBY UNION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ■ The weekly meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union Management Committee was. held in Bain’s Buildings on Monday evening, Mr J. W- T. Jones (chairman) presiding over a good attendance of members. FRIENDLY SOCIETY MATCH. A letter was received from the Paeroa tOddflelows’ Lodge advising that it was desirous of playing a match against members of .the local Druids Lodge, and the union was asked to (sanction the game and arrange a date. The chairman said that he thought the idea jwas a good one, and the union should assist the friendly societies if. possible. Mr T. M._ Wilkinson, representing thei local Oddfellow's’ Lodge, and who was present by invitation, said that his lodge had challenged the local Druids, the challenge being accepted. He suggested that the match should be played on Charity Saturday. Mr Welch doubted if the parent body 7 would recognise it as a charity match. Mr Neil pointed out that the players for both lodges were union members. Mr Vuglar asked how the proceeds of the match would be disposed of. It was decided to allow the match to be played on August 1, and that a members of each lodge be invited .0 meet the union when disposing of the funds. Messrs Welch, Neil, and Hodson were appointed to confer with the lodges and arrange details. CONVEYANCE OF PLAYERS. An account for the conveyance of representative players from Netherton to Paeroa and return in connection with the Paeroa v. Piako match was referred back by the Thames Vallej Union, with the intimation that the union did not pay car fares of player* from their homes, to a railway station. ’ After a discussion as to who had authorised the car the matter was held over pending the secretary interviewing the players concerned. PUBLICATION OF REP, TEAM. Mr Pennell drew attention to the fact that the names of the senior representative team had appeared in the “Gazette” that night before the union had had an opportunity of approving of the selection. Such action on the part of a member of the committee was not to be tolerated, he contended, and gave it as his opinion that the secretary was the'proper person to authorise the publication of the team, and the matter should not be taken out of his hands. Mr Vuglar agreed, and said that no member should take the initiative without consulting the secretary. Mr Morrison said tnat such action was contrary to a previous resolution. In reply to the chairman the secretary said that he had no knowledge of the team selected until that evening, and he thought that it was customary to advise the secretary before making, the selection public.. In explanation Mr Hodson said that lie had no desire to. ursurp the functions of the secretary. The; selection of the team was common knowledge, and he handed the names to the Press so as to give the players plenty of warning to attend for practice at the Drill-hall, whichhe pointed out would not have been the case had the team not been published until Wednesday evening. Mr Hodson contended that 't" the resolution on the books applied only to uniinancial members. It was decided to approve of the team, and that in future the names of selected players must be handed to the secretary. KNOCK-CUT COMPETITION. Considerable discussion took place as to the advisability of holding a " knock-out. senior competition for a banner to be presented by the union. Mr Welch said that.it was problematic whether the East and West teams would turn out. Mr Potter favoured the idea, and said that he thought the banner should be retained by the club win- ~~' ning it. The. qusetion of procuring a suitable banner was left in the hands °f Messrs Pennell and Crosby, and the matter, of holding the competition was deferred until the next meeting. THIRD-GRADE COMPETITION. Tlie chairman drew attention to the fact that there. dissatisfaction in the third-grade competition. He went on to explain that the West players had been unable to put a full team in the field until last Saturday, when* the club sent thirteen players. It was hardly fair to the schoolboys to have a combined team to compete against as matters stood, and it was not conducive to good football or friendly rivalry.' The union should also remember that F. Barakat had been transferred from the East to the West club for the purpose of strengthening that team, which had set out to “wallop” the schoolboys. He thought it a matter, for consideration whether the match should be recognised as an official one or not. The schoolboys had been imposed on, and the match should hot count in the competition. Mr Vuglar agreed, and said that ne would not tolerate such actions. Mr Pennell said that in conversation with Mr Preston- he had learned that the schoolboys were dissatisfied, and unless the position was altered it was proposed to. withdraw the school team from the competition next season. In answer to Mr Welch the chairman explained that School, West, and , Netherton had each played four matches and school was well in the lead. It was decided, to complete the second round, and that the match last Saturday should not be recognised in the competition. ft was also agreed that the only East player to be allowed to play for West would be F. Barakat, and Jen-

kinson was to be weighed before playing. REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS. Mr Hodson was appointed manager of the local senior representative team on Saturday. The conveying of the junior representatives to Waihi was left in the hands of Mr Potter and the secretary to. arrange. Mr Crosby was appointed manager of the team. It was decided that the juniors wear black and white jerseys. VEHICLES ON RACECOURSE. Mr Pennell drew attention to the fact that when the Jockey Club granted the use of the racecourse it wasstipulated that no vehicles or animals were to be taken inside the grounds. The chairman of the course committee had complained that the (Stipulation was not being observed. It was resolved that the gatekeeper be instructed to admit no vehicles or horses in future.
