NURSES EXAMINATIONS.

FINDING TRAVELLING EXPENSES. VIEWS OF THAMES BOARD. The question of defraying the travelling expenses of nurses who are required to travel to either Auckland or Hamilton in order to sit for tne State examination was introduced by Mr W. J. Hall at Monday’s, meeting of the Thames Hospital Board. Mr Hall said that in times gone by the Hamilton Hospital Board had provided accommodation free at .the nurses’ home for the nurses of the local ‘institution - who journeyed to Hamilton to sit for the State examination, but latterly owing to tne growth of the Waikato institution accommodation has not been available, which meant that the local staff had to pay for their own board and lodging during the three days of the examination, in addition to train fares. He thought the board should pay the expenses of such nurses desirous of (sitting for the examination. He had heard of other boards defraying the expenses of nurses. The chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) said that the board provided the nurses with every facility for obtaining a sound training in their profession, and it was in the nurses’ own interests to become qualified. He thougnt it was quite possible for the board to overdo the concessions to its staff. While desirous at all times of helping the nurses, he was not prepared to agree to the' suggestion put forward by Mr Hall. A member pointed but that very often as soon as a nurse passed the State examination after receiving her training she resigned, and her services were lost to the board that had made the facilities for qualifying available.

The chairman agreed, and he moved that the secretary ascertain from other hospital board what was being done lit the matter. Seconded by Mr Brenan and carried.
