STRAYING STOCK.

DAMAGE CAUSED IN BOROUGH. COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION. Arising out of the poundaeeper’s statement presented at last Thursday’s Paeroa Borough Council meeting it was found that the revenue from the pound for the month of June only amounted to £1 16s, whereas the expenditure totalled £7 10s. During his comment on the position the Mayor moved that the council wac very dissatisfied with the system of ranging being carried out by the poundkeeper, and .that Or. Edwards and the mover go into the matter with a view to bringing about an improvement, even if it meant, obtaining the services of a new poundkeeper. Seconded by Cr. de Castro. The Mayor said that enormous damage was being done by straying stock within the borough, and the Beautifying Society was suffering heavily and members were becoming very downhearted that their efforts should receive so little consideration. Cr. Porritt tsaid that- drovers of stock were rather prone to drive stock along the footpaths, and he thought that in the interests of women and children the practice should be discouraged. Cr Flatt: How are you going to stop it unless the streets are fenced ? The Mayor said that a prosecution now and again would have a deterring effect on offenders. Crs. de Castro, Silcock, and Pinder also spoke on the matter, and agreed that the abominable practice of alstock to. stray, cspeically at nights, was certainly on the increase Cr. Hare said he Was not so concerned with the financial aspect, of the pound statement as he was desirous of the sub-committee makifig an example ot offenders whenever possible. . Cr. Edwards said that no doubt the offences were on the increase, but at the same time he thought the ranger had “bucked up” lately.
