DISTRICT NEWS.
WAITAKARURU. CHURCH FUND CONCERT. Every now and then there Is a concert staged on the Plains that is far and away better than the average. Such a concert was the one organised in aid of church funds .and held m the Waitakaruru Hall on Tuesday evening.' Opening with a Quartette by Messrs Schultz, Tarver, Rowlings, and the Rev. Brooker, there followed songs by the Rev. A. M. Contain .(Paeroa), Miss Dunn (Waihi), Mr A. Sutton (Turua), Messrs Calvert and Morgan (W,aihi), Miss Cumberworth (Waihi), Mr A. Walker (Turua), Miss McCullay (Paeroa) Mr Dalton (Wai-
takaruru) and Misses Dunn and Cumberworth (Waihi). Recitations were given by Mr Armour (Waihi) and Miss L. Harris (Waitakaruru). Every item was deservedly enchored, and many ■of the artists wore recalled several Mmes. TURUA. THE BAND. The recently formed Turua brass band was put on a sound business footing at a public meeting held for the purpose on Monday evening. Mr F. Stephens presided over an attendance of about thirty enthusiatss. — A committee of management, comprising members of the band and general public, was appointed, and it was decided to ask the Turua Town Board to. become trustees. Mr J. Mules was appointed president, Messrs C. Scott, J. T. Davies, and A. Aberhart vice-presidents, and Mr A. J. Heaseman secretary. In order to raise funds for the purchase of instruments, etc., it was decided to canvass for subscriptions, and to hold functions from time to time. - ItGATEA. THE POST OFFICE. Several minor items in connection with'the construction of the new post office at Ngatea were attended to by the builders this week. The building .has-now been handed over by the Public Works Department to the Postal Department Conversing with a representative of the department the builder learned that it had hot A been decided what .should become of 'the old post office building. NEW SHOPS. Builders have been active in Ngatea for some considerable time erecting new-shops. A music, book, and fancy goods shop was opened this week, as also w'as an engineering shop, although riot yet completed. Another garage is nearing completion, while the timber has. arrived for a.confe'eitoner’s shop and residence. Of tne total number of shops on the Plains nearly half of them are in Ngatea.
