PAEROA RUGBY UNION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of. the committee of the Paeroa Rugby Union was held in Bain’s Buildings on Monday evening, the chairman (Mr J. W, T. Jones) presiding. THAMES VALLEY UNION. The Thames Valley’ Rugby Union advised that a meeting of the union would be held at Paeroa on July 14 REGISTRATIONS. R. Saundens and E. R. Robinson were registered as third-grade players and allotted to the Netherton Chib. F. Barakat’s application for transfer from the East third-grade team to West was deferred until next meeting. WIN BY DEFAULT. The referee (Mr J. D. Crawford) reported that the Suburbs junior team had failed to keep its engagement with the Karangahake team at Karangt hake on Saturday last. Ln answer to the chairman the Ka’angahakc delegate said that his team was not notified until after 2.30 p.m. After a long discussion it w.as resolved that the Karangahake team wins the game by default, and that the Suburbs team be written to and reminded that a similar breach in the future would be met by a substantial fine. SUSPENSION. The case of E, King, a member of the Karangahake team who was suspended for the rest of the season, was reconsidered. After Mr Penlington had given further information regarding the incident it was resolved that the suspension should stand.. Mr D. A. Vincent dissented. SCHOOL UNION EXPENSES. Mr C. H. Potter, handed in the sum of £l, being the proceeds of a scratch match at Netherton, and asked the chairman to accept .the money as a nucleus of a fund to provide travelling expenses for schoolboys, . The chairman thanked Mr Potter, and congratulated the Netherton people on their enterprise. He expressed the hope that Paeroa supporters would follow the lead of Netherton. FIXTURES. The following fixtures for Saturday were approved:— Senions.—Paeroa v. Piako; at Paeroa, at 3 p.m. Mr Morrison was appointed manager of the local team and Mr Jones was deputed to meet the visitors. . Juniors. —Paeroa v. at Paeroa, at 2.30 p.m. Mr B. Neil was .appointed manager of the local team and Mr T. P, Vuglar was selected to meet the visitors on arrival. ‘ _ JERSEYS FOR JUNIORS. It was resolved that the junior representatives play in black and white jerseys. ‘ - On the motion of Mr Vincent, seconded by Mr Neil, it was resolved that on a jersey being loaned in good order the union replace it in the event of it being damaged during .the progress of the match. FUTURE ARRANGEMENTS. Mr Potter said that it was small wonder that the union could not get. a gate at Paeroa, and pointed out.that. the West senior team on Saturday contained no less than six third-grade players. Mr, Welch said that the position was no fault of the union’s.

Mr Vincent pointed, out that the onus was on the selectors. Mr W. Pennell said that the gate receipts and the talk of the public generally showed that it wag a waste of time going on with the competitions. He had been informed that if a combined East and West team played a combined Netherton and Suburbs team at Hikutaia a gate* of £5 would be guaranteed. A long discussion of a lively nature ensued. . The chairman rose to a point ot order, and said that members were introducing club matters. He thought that some of the selectors were not working in harmony with the union. Mr Hodson instanced a case where he had called up two junior players to isenior games and they had refused to play.

The chairman said that if Mr Hodson would state his case in writing the union would deal with it, Mr Penlington suggested providing a banner for a knock-put senior senior round. By such means tht juniors would have to go up to senior positions, and the competition would, stimulate interest. Mr Potter moved that the senior cup competition be played until it is won outright. - Seconded by Mr Vincent and carried, the resolution to apply to the junior competition also. Mr Pennell asked if the selectors were to be allowed to go on in the same way. In his opinion they were flouting the wishes of the union. The chiarman asked what would be the remedy.. Mr Vincent replied that destructive criticism would do no gcod. He moved that the question of providing a banner for a knock-out round be deferred until the next meeting. Seconded by Mr Welch. PROMOTION OF PLAYERS. Mr Hodson, selector of .the East senior team, reported that C. Treanor and A. McKenna (junior players) had been selected to play in a senior match but had failed to take the field. , In reply to the meeting McKenna 'admitted having said that he would play senior, but under the doctor’s orders he had refrained from, taking the field. In answer to the chairman McKenna said that he had played Jibekey against his parents’ wishes.- He was prepared to-play senior football but his parents objected. In explanation Treahor said that he had informed Mr Hodson that owing to influenza he. was not well enough to play. The explanations were accepted. PLAYER SUSPENDED. The referee (Mr R; B. Penlington)

reported that during the process of the West v. Netherton junior game at Netherton on Saturday he had occasion to order a’member of the Netherton team named E. Williams off the field for disputing his ruling, and also for using obscene language. He asked for the maximum penalty to be imposed. Mr Potter corroborated the statement m.ade by Mr Penlington, and said that tne case was a bad one. , It was resolved that Williams bfc suspended for the rest of the season. REPORT CRITICISED. Mr Crosby moved that the Paeroa Union was doing all in its pbwer to foster football in the district, and that it resents the statements containde in Monday’s issue of the "Hauraki Plains Gazette” as the public knew that the fault lay with the clubs under the union." Seconded by Mr Potter. Mr Vuglar moved as an amendment that no action be taken. Seconded by Mr Pennell. The amendment was put and declared lost. The proposal was then carried the voting being 5 for an,d 3 against.

Waitakaruru could not muster a full team on Saturday last, so Kerepeehi. put a team of equal strength, comprising senions and juniors, into the field, and a good even mud scramble ensued, each’ side securing one score. A peculiar point arose at Turua on Saturday last. The visiting team was kept waiting on the -ground for over half an hour for the home team to put in an appearance, and the referee was desirous of obeying the union’s ruling to commence the matoh at 2.30 p.m. But there was no ball available, so there could be no kick-off for a try to be secured.

The difficulty of keeping spectators back off the playing field will never be overcome on the Plains until a firm stand is taken and officials learn to show an example rather than continue to be the greatest offenders. Invariably, at the commencement of a match the great majority of spectators are behind the wire, and those in front, who block the view of others who have paid for admission, include a big proportion of officials. Naturally, as the game goes on more and more go up to the side line, and there is rarely a game that does not have to'be stopped while spectators are sent back behind the wires. Strong action should be taken by the Rugby Union against a certain spectator at the. Ngatea v. West match—a supporter of one of the clubis that would have been glad to see Ngatea beaten, as his club would then have a better chance of-winning the competition—if the charge of attempting to trip a player while running near the line can be proved against him. TEAM FOR SATURDAY. Great difficulty has been experienced in securing a .team to Hauraki Plains at Waihi on Saturday on account of the number of players who are unable to make the trip, The fofllowing seletcion was announced last night :— Full-back :* J. Adlum. Three-quarters : B. Wallis, F. Nicol, C. Molloy. Five-eighths : W. Whelan, L, Cotter. Half-back: W. Kidd. Rover: C. Stretton. Forwards-JL. Berney, R. Steedman, W. Hoopef/G. Clark, A.
