Two street lights have been installed in Waitakaruru, one near the canal bridge and one near the stream bridge.

Hares are increasing in numbers on the Hauraki Plains. When motoring to Waitakaruru from Ngatea in the moonlight this week nine hares were noticed by one man. Hares are frequently seen at ©rongo and Kopuarahi.

Fine weather has prevailed locally since tlie week-end, and the stormwater which abounded on the low-ly-ing parts of the town, has subsided. A heavy pall of fog hung oyer the town this morning, and it was nearly midday before the sun broke through and dried the atmosphere.

A conference ini connection with the proposed amalgamation of the Thames and Waihi hospital districts is being held at the County Chambers, Paeroa, between the two boards to-day. Dr. M. I-I. Watt, acting Director-General of Health, is attending the conference.

The fourth series of basketball games was played on Saturday last in the Paeroa school grounds, many spectators being present. The games resulted as follows : Kiwi 39, v. Tui 7 ; Areta 19, v. Arolia 2 ; Moanii 32, v. Rangi 30. Players arc advised that all fixtures for Saturday next are postponed.

Dr. J. W. Mcllraith, Senior inspector of Schools, Hawke’s Bay, who has recently returned from England, where he made a thorough study ot modern educational methods, is to deliver a lecture at the Centenary Hall, Paeroa, to-morrow evening.
