HOCKEY.

SATURDAY’S MATCH. That greater Interest fcs being taken in hockey locally was evidenced by the large number of spectators in attendance at the hockey ground, next to the tennis courts on the Te Aroha road, on Saturday afternoon. A match was played between a team of young men, mostly members of the East junior football team, and an eleven chosen from the Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey Club. The ladies put up a remarkably good showing against their more doughty opponents, and although they were beaten they played much the better game. In the final half the ladies were on the attack throughout the spell, but although the ball was taken into the circle on a number of occasions they just failed in the necossary finish required to score.

The ladies’ team has shown a marked improvement since the club was formed about six weeks ago, and great credit ie due to the captain, Miss V. Shand, who has coached the team to its present standard of play. It should not be long before the team can give a good account of itself in the playing field. The ground on Saturday was veiy wet in places, in addition to being very uneven. However, an enjoyable game resulted in the mens’ team winning by two goals to nil. Goals were shot by* Mitchell and Dawson.
