WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
ENGINEER’S report. The following report for the month of June was submitted by the engineer (Mr E. Shaw) to. yesterday's meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council:— “A list of grants for the current year amounting to £BOOO-odd, including the past year’s which were necessary to be renewed, was forwarded to the resident engineer, Public Works Department, Paeroa. The amount allowable to the county for the year its £B5OO. Permissible allocation, £6OOO to March 31, 1926. A list of grants for roadworks under Mines amounting to £6OO was also forwarded. “The following works have been completed: O. Cummings’ contract for forming and culverting Pukekauri Road, Which gives settlers through access to Waihi and Waikino; also the contracts for deepening road drains at Kaimanawa and Odl Te Aroha Road.
“The roller was taken to Mangaiti and the new metal on Station Road has been rolled in. After completing thiis work the roller was taken to roll in the metal on Old Te Aroha Road, but this work for the present is held up on account of the weather.
“A start was made at Waikino by the Waihi Borough plant to scarify and roll the main road, but owing to the weather it had to be abandoned until the conditions are more favourable. The Waihi-Tauranga Road has been completed by the Waihi Borough plant, but owing to the quality of the metal and the thinness of the stir-' facing it was impossible to make a first-class job, and under the circumstances a fair one was made.
“The Maratoto road its getting into a bad state, and as the Mines Department refuses to give any assistance it will be necessary to have some repairs done. Some urgent repairs were carried out during the month.
In reply to Cr. Robinson the engineer said that it would cost about £2O to make the road passable. On the motion of Cr. Robinson, seconded by Cr. Morrison, it was resolved that the engineer be empowered to carry out repairs to the extent of £2O. ‘‘Hollis’ Road, Waitekauri Riding — Correspondence will come before you to-day re the above road. In company:, with the riding member, Cr. H. M. Corbett, I made a visit to this road. Mr Hollis was met on the ground and he explained his troubles, which will be placed before 1 you by the riding member. “Puke Bridge.—So far no reply has been received from the Public Works Department concerning the opening of the above bridge. A reply was received from the Northern Steam Snip Co. stating that the company could not take over the responsibility. Should a favourable reply not be received from the Public Works Department, other satisfactory arrangements can he made. “General repairs with metal to the surfacing of the metalled roads have been carried out on portions under main highways, and also repairs to several roads in the ridings. The railing on the outer side ofi the road through the Karangahake Gorge was getting into disrepair, and I have had the same renovated. When new rails were required I placed 2-inch pipe instead of wood, as the pipe was cheaper and more lasting. “The bridge over the Mangakiri stream on Old Tauranga Road which was 'damaged by floods last year is being rebuilt and exetnded so as to provide greater waterway for future floods. “Puke to Hubbard’s Road. —This road is in need of further drainage. The outfall drain, although deep
enough, requires widening by putting a greater slope to its banks so as to stop same from slipping. Also a side drain running parallel with the road is reqiured to' take off the 'water, which is keeping the road in a sodden condition. There is £loo', £ for £, subsidy on the estimates for this road.” Cr. Hubbard moved that the engineer be authorised to go on with the necessary work. —Carried.
