THAMES PROPAGANDA.
(.To the Editor}. Sir. —It is with a considerable amount of indignation I read the reports of the Thames harbour improvements, etc., in the “Herald.” These articles candidly state that the ■scheme depends largely on the 'Hauraki Plains, and the prosperity of the town is the result of trade from the isame place, Why should that be • why should material, goods, etc., be carried to Thames, then .sold ..and carried to the Plains, when the people hero have a river of their own just as convenient as Thames, and can’ get everything direct from Auckland? Thames is a dead-end, with no surrounding country of any value. Except for Price’s Foundry it. produces nothing, but .is a hanger-on—a parasite on the back of the Hauraki Plains. One can understand the business people of Thames agitating for anything that will bring them business, but 1 don t understand the Plains people—especially the County Council— voting for expenditure that will react on them and delay the establishment of businesses that will eater for the requirements of Plains residents, at prices equal to Thames without the additional expense of travelling or carting. There is no duobt that in the future Hauraki Plains will be able to take care of itself: but every additional expenditure to boost Thames at the expense of the Plains people delaying that happy time. J'.R., Ngatea.
