UNPLEASANT LOCAL CONDITIONS.

RIVER SLIGHTLY SWOLLEN

The weather locally "was very stormy during .the week-end. Shortly after nine o'clock on Saturday morning a misty rain set in, and continued until midday, when a steady downpour followed throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Yesterday morning the wind changed to a more southerly direction and no rain fell until the evening.

Conditions underfoot at present are decidedly damp and unpleasant. There is a fair amount of local stormwater on the lew-lying levels in tlie borough, but the water is gradually receding.

The heavy rain on Saturday afternoon increased the volume of iva.ter in the Ohinemuri River, and by yesterday morning it had risen two feet at the traffic bridge, but this morning it. had receded again. No damage has so far been reported.

The Taniwha, which left Auckland yesterday afternbon with a full cargo, including a lot of goods for transhipment to Te Aroha, made a good passage to Paeroa last night and berthed at the Ngahina wharf shortly before one o’clock this morning. The Waihbu River, although still in a fairly swollen state, hits receded nearly two feet since Saturday midday.

The local post office advises that telephone communication, which was temporarily deranged earlier in the week, has been restored, and everything is working satisfactorily. Steady rain set in again at an early hbiir this morning, and still continues.
