Prior to opening the meeting Lire president asked those present to stand and pass a vote of condolence with the family of the late Prime Minister, and also to the family ot the late Captain Sullivan, who for many years had been in charge of the s.s. Waimarei and who would be well known to all old settlers. STREET LIGHTING, Arising- out of the reading of ■ the minutes,'Cr. Hare reported that the council had ordered lights for the wharf corner and the school coiner, and on numerous occasions had asked the Power Board to expedite the installation. STOP-BANKING. The president reported that a reply had been received in regard to the association's request, and the stopbanking of the river through Netheiton would commence vrey shortly.. MAUKORO, DEVIATION. Mr T. Vowles said that he had seen by the “Gazette” that the council intended putting the cost of the Maukoro bridge over the whole county, deispite the wishes of the ratepayers as denoted by the recent bridge poll. He thought an objection should ’be lodged. Cr. Hare said the position was the same for the Kirikiri bridge. The Pinko County had cited the Plains County to contribute half the cost, and the council had decided to spread the rate over the whole county. He had voted against, but the majority had ruled. He had endeavoured to have the defining of the rating area, delayed, but the council had not agreed.
In reply to Mr Vowles Cr. Hare said that it was of no use the ratepayers lodging ,an objection, hs. the majority of th'e council agreed with the proposal. SCHOOL NOTICE BOARDS.
Mr C. H. Potter, chairman of lire School Committee, drew' attention to the fact that notice boards warning motorists to drive slowly past the ischool had not yet been'erected.' The council had supplied -the notice boards, but the school committee was not prepared to incur the expense of having them erected, and; thought that the council should have the work done or supply the necessary material. Mr Death and others said, that the committee should nail the notices up on existing posts, as had been done in other parts of the country. Members of the committee pointed out that it was illegal to utilise telegraph' or power poleis for the purpose, and urged Cr. Hare to bring the matter before the council. ROADSIDE DRAINS. Air. Vowles asked Cr. Hare to bring] before the council the state of the drain on Wilson’s road. In grading, the road the council had caused many slips, which had not yet been removed. In his opinion it would be necessary- for a drain to be dug on the>, northern side of the rbad before tlie> road' was metalled.
Cr. Hare stated that if the rate-i payers would pay half the cost the-; council would have the drain cleaned..) 1 Mr Potter asked Cf.. Hare tp point: 1 out to the council the necessity of a. drain on the side- of the tschool. road. Cr. Hare said that a settler had asked for a, culvert to bo put in, and had agreed to. - ’ do the work if the council supplied-the pipes. The pipes had been supplied. ' . Mr Potter Said that a. second drain wais necessary, as one drain would not carry all the water. The settlers would find half the cost of the new work.
