PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Paeroa District High School was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday last, the chairman (Mr C. H. Pascoe) presiding over the following: Messrs W. T. Power, W. Purdie, C. T. Mettam, F. M Eaddy, A. E. Say, R. J. Thorp, W. H. Blakeway, and the secretary (Mr W. T, Lawrence). The headmaster, Mr G. H. Taylor, was in attendance. EXTRA BLACKBOARDS. The architect to the Board advfced that two sheets of wall blackboard had been forwarded, and approval was given for the re-hinging of one of the classroom doors so as to alTow of extra wallboard space. The carrying out of the alterations was left in the hands of .the chairman and secretary. GRAMOPHONE SUBSIDY. The Board forwarded a letter from the Department in. connection with the committee’s application for a subsidy for the purpose of buying records for the school gramophone, and advised that if the amount of the local contributions was paid into the public account within a reasonable time the school would be. able to purchase one of the approved machines and to obtain records up to the/amount left over after providing for the machine. It was decided to write and . again point out that the school was already in possession of a gramophone, and it could not therefore bank the money. A subsidy for the purchase of records only was sought. ELECTRIC COOKING. The Thames Valley Power Board wrote advising that it was prepared to loan, free of charge, electric ranges, valued at £25, to each manual school within its reticulation .area, provided the committee would defray the cost of installation and pay the charges for current consumed direct to the board. It was decided to forward the letter to the manual and technical branch, Auckland, with a recommendation that the offer be availed of. HEATING CLASSROOM. The secretary reported that a new co,al stove,'with fittings, had been received for the high school room. CARTAGE CONTRACT. It was reHolyed that J. Gordon, carrier, be authorised to attend to the cartage of all goods arriving by rail or steamer for the ensuing twelve months. THANKS. Mrs C. A. Massey .telegraphed her acknowledgment of a telegram of condolence in connection with the death of the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey. REPORTS. Arising out of the visiting committee’s report Mr Mettam drew attention to the amount of sand that was being washed over the grass plot and out on to the street in wet weather. He suggested that by deepening the half-round drain and constructing a kerbing conditions would be improved. Mr Mettam also reported that there was ..a need for draught boards to be affixed on the window sills of standard S room. The report was approved and referred to the chairman and Messrs Mettam and Powei’ to give effect to the recommendations, Messrs Power and Eaddy were appointed a visiting for the ensuing month. USE OF 'GROUNDS. The headmaster in his capacity of president of the basketball teams sought permission for matches to be played in the school grounds. The use of the teachens’ study on Saturdays was also sought.—Granted. BASKETBALL SHIELD. The chairman iutiiwated that he intended fco present a shield for competition among the basketball teams, and suggested that the members might contribute a silver centre-piece and silver plates to jbe affixed on the shield. The suggestion was' heartily endorsed, and the headmaster was authorised to procure the necessary number of silver plates and centre-piece. FIREWOOD. The matter of disposing pf the fir O'wood accruing from the topping of the wattle trees near the infants’ classroom was referred to the headmaster, secretary, and Mr Mettam, with power to act, EXAMINATION CENTRE. The action of the headmaster amd Secretary in endeavouring to arrange to have Paeroa included in the list of examination centres for the holding of teachers’ certificates examinations in August next was approved SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. A circular from the Board was received advising that a fortnights holiday would be granted from August 15 to 24) next, inclusive. PLANTING OF TREES. The Paeroa Borough Council wrote grafting permission to plant a belt of shelter trees on Primrose Hill along the school boundary. ACCOUNTS, Accounts totalling £22 11s 7d were passed for payment. PURCHASING OF GEAR. The Jubilee Institute for the Blind ini a circular letter appealed to School committees when purchasing requirements, such as cocoanut fibre mats and Waste-paper baskets, for consideration tn be given tb the gjoods manufactured by the inmates of- the [Blind Institute at Auckland.
