At a meeting of householders held at Karangahake oh Monday evening tlie following were elected as a school committee : Mr J. B. Morris ' (chairman), Mesdames McLeod, Tierney, and Robinson (secretary and treasurer).
His Grace the Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand (Dr. A. V. Averill), accompanied by the vicar of Waihi, the Rev. G. R. Barnett, paid a visit to Waitawhcta yesterday afternoon and was accorded a public welcome by the settlers. A confirmation service was held in the Waitawhcta Hall.
A heavy hailstorm, fortunately of short duration, passed over Paeroa early yesterday afternoon. Bright sunshine followed. Last night there was the heaviest frost so far recorded this winter. This morning bright sunshine prevailed until 9 o’clock, when heavy clouds from a north-west-erly direction banked up and a drizzly rain fell.
A remit sent to the recent cnoference of hospital boards»at Auckland sought an increase in hospital feqs from 9s a day to 15s a day. The matter, after careful consideration by the conference, was rejected, In explaining the position at Monday's meeting of the Thames Hospital Board the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) said that the conference generally recognised that a decided increase in fees would have to be faced before long, but it desired to postpone the matter as long as possible.
The Auckland Racing Club’s winter carnival occupies pride of place ’n this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review.” The Great Northern Steeplechase is the centre of widespread interest, and snapshots of this big event give a graphic idea of the progress of the contest. Arising out of the recent conference of hospital boards at Auckland a remit was carried asking the Government to amend legislation to allow of hospital board elections being held every three years for cities and boroughs, instead of every two years as at present.
