DISTRICT NEWS.

TURUA. FORMATION OF BAND. Turua is now assured of having a brass band in the very near future. The proposal, which was promoted by Mr L. Young, an ex-bandmaster, has been taken up enthusiastically by other ex-bandsmen, many of whom have their own instruments. Other instruments have been purchased and music borrowed or purchased. There are over a dozen old playens in the band. The first practice will be held on Wednesday next.

On Tuesday evening a plain and fancy dress social was held in the Victoria Hall to rainse funds. There were about forty couples present, but very few were in fancy dress. The prize for the ladies’ section was awarded to Miss D. Miller, who wore a costume decorated with used wax matches and labelled “No more •strike,” while Mr J. Treadaway (Golliwog) annexed the prize competed for by the men. The function was a: decided tsuccess socially and financially. WAITAKABUBU. FAREWELL SOCIAL. To bid farewell to the popular late postmistress, Mrs E. Barlow, who, with Mr Barlow, is leaving the district shortly, a social was held in the Waitakaruru Hall on Wednesday evening, and was attended by most of the residents of the district. During the evening Mr and Mrs Barlow were presented with a suit-case and a cheque.
