HOSPITAL REPORTS.

THE THAMES INSTITUTION. PROGRESS FOR THE MONTH. The following reports for the month of Maj’ were approved at Mondays meeting of the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board meeting :— SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. The resident surgeon, Dr. J. Ritchie, reported that 39 males and 35 females were admitted, and four deaths, all males, had occurred. The discharges numbered 33 males and 32 females, leaving 25 males and 22 females remaining at date. Out-patients were 11 males and 3 females, involving 79 attendances. Operations on 31 males and 25 females had been performed, “Nurse Barker has given every satisfaction as theatre sister. As she has served her probationerj’ period of three months I would recommend her appointment as sister. “I would also recommend a readjustment of X-ray photograph fees.” It was resolved that Nurse Barker be appointed sister at. a salary of £llO a year as from June 1. The scale of charges submitted by Dr. Ritchie were approved. MATRON’S REPORT. Matron K. M. Anisenne advised that as tlje number of patients in the institution had considerably decreased she suggested that only one probationer be taken on to replace the two nurses who had recently resigned. Application was made for annual leave, a portion to be taken this month and the balance in July.

In a further report the matron stated that the number of patients admitted to the maternity annexe during May was five. Four births had taken place, and two mothers and one baby were remaining in the institution at date. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer (Mr A. M. Soniniorville) reported that the radiators had been in use in the Ehrenfried ward, as well uh in the surgery and X-ray room. Two of the holding studs of the main steam stop-valves had broken and had been renewed. The total coal consumption for the month was approximately 27 tons llcwt. TARARU HOMES. The manager (Mr W. D. Gilmore)

reported that there were 20 male and 4 female inmates remaining at the district homes. The conduct of both sexes had been very good. The farm was looking very well, and the stock was well‘forward. NATIVE NURSE. The Nativo Nurse (Miss J. M. Jarrett) reported that she had attended and advised three Europeans and 22 Maoris during May. Two patients had been sent into Thames Hospital and one to a private hospital at Morrinsville. Lectures had been given on typhoid inoculation and generhl health and cleanliness. Thirteen Maori pahs had been visited, and the district generally was practically free from sickness. The total fees collected amounted to 14s. DISTRICT NURSE. Nurse L. McNamara, Pate tonga, wrote as follows: “I am enclosing fees £1 141 s, collected to date. It is now very difficult to get patients to the Thames Hospital, or even to Turua, on account of the very bad state of .the road between K.aihere wharf and Ngatea. Also, the boat to Patetonga has been discontinued. The only safe outlet at present in cases of emergency is to MOrrinsville. As there is only a private hospital in that town patients arc complaining about the expenses. Would it be possible for the Government launch from Kerepeehi to convey patients at a nominal charge.” In her report for the month of May Nuiise McNamara stated that she had attended 18 patients, involving 30 visits.

Arising out of the letter, the chairman said it was a serious matter to

get patients from Patctomga into a hospital. The Lands Department’s launches were too .costly to run, and passengers could not be carried on the Dairy Company’s launches, as it was against the law.

Mr Danby suggested that Mr Williams, launch-owner, at Patetonga, should be approached with a view to getting him to reduce his charges for the carriage of urgent cases from Patetonga to Kcrepechl. The matter was referred to Mr Berney for a report.
