DESTROYED BY FIRE.
HOUSE COMPLETELY GUTTED. FURNITURE AND EFFECTS LOST. Yesterday afternoon at about 3.30 o'clock the 8-roomed residence of Mr J. Handley, jtuir.. Mill Road, was completely destroyed by fire. Early in the afternoon Mr Handley, who. was alone, lit a fire in one of the rooms, and was there until he went out to bring the cows in to be milked, When he left the fire had died down, and appeared quite safe, but shortly after commencing milking he noticed tlie presence of smoke round the house and he hurried across. By that time the fire had a good hold, and in the absence of fire-fighting appliances nothing could be done,. He endeavoured to save some of the furniture, but tlie smoke and heat drove him out of the house. The insurances arc £7OO on the house and £l5O on the furniture.
