On Saturday next the Paeroa Ladies’ Golf Club will play the first round of the eclectic match for tlie trophy presented by Mi's Edwards. Players are to arrange their own partners. The old rivalry between Ngatea and Kerepeehi has now died down as far as Ngatea is concerned, but not so with Kereepehi-ites, who can still be depended upon to make sarcastic re-, marks or inferences at the expense of their more fortunate rival township. Popular opinion in Kerepeehi has it that Ngatea controls the County Council .to the betterment of Ngatea and the detriment of Kerepeehi. At. the Ratepayers’ Association meeting on Wednesday last, after a long discussion on the injustice done to Kerepcchi by the council in not erecting its chambers in that township, it was suggested in all seriousness that the council be asked to hold some of its meetings in the township on the hill. Supporters of the suggestion advocated the council holding itis meetings in the centre which had the most business to- be dealt with on the day in question. Ratepayers could thus attend the meetings at little inconvenience. Other speakers went so far as to suggest, that the council be asked to shift its headquarters permanently to Kerepeehi. The County Chambers could doubtlessly be let to the Ngatea Chamber of Commerce.
Throngs the simple process of toasting his tobacco the modern mnaufacturer has been able to effect an enormous improvement in the smoking quality. It is a well-known fact that cooked food is wholes, omer and more digestible than raw food, and the same principle applies to tobacco. We do not eat raw 1 meat or fish, or drink raw coffee, why should we smoke raw tobacco ’ It is wonderful how the flavour of tobacco can be developed by toasting. Try any of the local brands and you will notice a marked improvement, and, what is also important, as a result of the toasting process the tobacco loses all deleterious properties. Smokers who study their health should therefore give this matter their attention, and avoid strong foreign tobaccos heavily charged with nicotine—they are sure to undermine even the most robust constitiontoin. Not only is the local article pui;cr and more wholesome than most of the imported brands, but it is cheaper, too. Riverhead Gold is mild and aromatic ; Toasted Navy (Jut (Bulldog), of medium: strength ; but if you prefer a full body try Chit Ping No. 10.* For Coughs and Colds ueven’ fails.
