OHINEMURI RIVER IN FLOOD. « LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED. The weather locally was of a very boisterous nature. On Friday afternoon heavy showers of rain fell at intervals, and the wind changed from a southerly direction to almost due cast, and increased invelocity as the night wore on Saturday morning dawned with a howling gale blowing from the east, and accompanied bja torrential showehs of fairly long duration. During the morning the evecutive of the Paeroa Rugby Union met and decided to postpone the matches set down for decision that day owing to hte unpropitious weather.

During the afternoon and early evening the weather cleared a little, the wind moderating,,but before .10 p.m; conditions became worse and a heavy gale prevailed all night and well on into yesterday afternoon.

During . yesterday the jOhinemurl River was in a fair flood, and a large number of logs and much debris passed down from the upper reaches. At 2 o’clock the gauge on the traffic bridge showed that the river had risen about six feet. Settlers in the neighbourhood of Moananul’s Flat look the precaution to remove their stock to high ground, as also did the property-owners on the Waihi Road, side of the river.

This morning conditions have model ated considerably, and although the barometer is still registering low, the sky is somewhat clearer and the wind has dropped.

A certain amount of damage ha» been caused by rain-water leaking into the telephone cables, but there is little interruption far as communication is concerned.

During the height of the gale on Saturday night a large pole carrying telephone wires was blown down on Turner’s Hill, Waihi Road. The telegraph. gang spent yesterday re-erect-ing the pole and wires, and communication has been restored. This morning the Ohinemuri River has subsided nearly six feet. Residential gardens in the .borough sustained a buffeting in the high wind, but no serious damage has occurred.
