COUNTY WORKS.

PROGRESS IN OIMNBMUBI. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the engineer (Mr E. Shaw), at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council — “Notice has come to hand from the Mines Department concerning grants for the current year’s Estimates. I expect a similar notice from the Public Works Department any tim,e and as they are required in Wellington before the council meets again I would ask tile co-operation of riding members in supplying a list of urgent grants in their respective ridings in terms of the circular issued by both departments.

“Estimates for construction and

maintenance under main highways have been forwarded for the current year.

“Deviation at Otto Bjerring's. 1 interviewed the resident engineer, Mi May, oii the matter, and he intends at an early date to accompany me over the route and report.

“Hikutaia Tram-line.—ln company with the chairman and Cr. Morrison I .met the engineer of the Hauraki Plains County on the site of the proposed .tram-line, and satisfactory airangements were made. "Water Supply to Natives.—The 2in main that serves the natives on Moananui Flat its suspended by cable over the Ohinemuri River. During the late floods the cable was carried away, and a temporary connection was made. It will be necessary to reconstruct the same by renewing the anchorages and raising the main another 6ft, so as to place it clear above the highest flood level. ” ‘ a “Hubbard’s Road. —The rolling of this road had to be suspended owing to the foundation in parts being too soft to carry .the machine, and therefore a satisfactory job could not be made. Up to date the machine has not gone to Mangaiti on account of not having a driver. I have now secured one, and it will go forward tomorrow.

“As a portion of Waitawheta Road iss in need of repair, I would ask permission to get 50 yards of metal out of the Quarry adjacent, and, it can be broken into the holes and so save the cost of knapping. Also 50' yards of gravel are required for repairs on the Hikutaia Settlement road: this saw be placed on the’Toad at 8s per yard by one ,of the settlers in the vicinity.

Plans and specifications of the works' let at the last meeting have been returned approved, and authority has been received for same. “Levels were taken for deepening 30 chains of Rotokohu Road drain, 52 chains of Komata North drain, and 30 chains of Gubb’s Road drain. All were let privately at a reasonable price.

“Cadman Road Drain. —This drain will be completed this week, and a fine job has been made of it. A large amount of sand has been taken out, and I intend placing some on the main road to act as a surfacing for the metal.

“Concerning the boundary between the Paeroa borough and the county on the Paeroa-Waihi road: As the above runs down the centre of the road, which proves most unsatisfactory, I would recommend that arrangements be made with the borough to undertake: the maintenance of half the total length instead of as at present.”
