MISHAP AT KEREPEEHI.

DREDGEMASTER INJURED.

FOOT IN COGWHEELS. An employee of the Lands Drainage Department, Mr W. M. Herkt, met with a serious accident on a dredge in the Awaiti about 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday last. By some, mischance his foot slipped on to a set of cogwheels and his big toe was cut off and the other toes and portion of the foot crushed. The full extent of the injuries is not yet known. The machinery was well protected according to recognised standards, and had been passed by the Inspector of Machinery on numerous occasions, and Mr Herkt was thoroughly acquainted with it, having been master of the dredge—a Bucyrus land niachine —since its was erected three years ago.

When the mishap occurred Mr Herkt manoeuvred the dredge into a safe position to be left unattended while his mate went to telephonic for a doctor. A launch happened to be nearby ready to depart for Kerepeehi, and the injured man proceeded thus and was met on arrival by Dr. J. J. Valentine, of Turua, who, after dressing the wound, conveyed the patient to Orongo, where the ambulance was waiting on thq ferry to take him to the Thames Hospital.
