The Thames Valley Rugby Union advises that the N.Z. Rugby Union has • now adopted the dispensation granted to the New) Zealand and New Soutn Wales unions whereunder the kicker r.nd placer in the case of penalty kicks at goal may be the same person. A peculiar incident occurred at the Kerepeehi-Ngatea match. The referee had occasion to caution a Kerepe&hi player during the first spell, and a short time afterwards he observed a player whom he took to be the same man doing the same thing again; This man lie. ordered off the field. At th s half-time interval the mistake was brought to his notice. The two men. who were brothers, were brought together, and the striking likeness showed the ease with which the mistake could have been made. Realising that he had made a the referee, who could not legally alter his decision, asked the Ngatea team if it would permit the player to go on the field again. This, however, was not agreed to, and the Kerepeehi team had to continue with fourteen men. Unfortunately, as there will not be a union meeting this week, he will also have to stand down next Saturday. _ The question of the insurance of footbailers agi inrt accident while playing is one that has been given a great deal of contsidei ation by Rugby unions. The secretary bf the Haiiraki Plains Rugby Union has circularised many other unions asking their experiences, and the replies received have indicated that only In a very few cases have unions carried the risa themselves. The experiences of these unions was such that the Hauraki Plains union did not consider it advisable to promote a scheme of its own. The financial state of the union, the halt-hearted support received ty other unions from their affiliated clubs, and the difficulty of collecting subscriptions were factors taken into consideration, and the fact that insurance companies generally were loathe to accept this particular risk was the deciding factor, several of the unions had replied recommending certain insurance companies, and had stated that they had recommended members of thein sub-unions and clubs .to take out personal accident policies. The Platas union did nut pass a resolution on the matter, bu. it was generally agreed that players would bq well advised to effect their own cover. The secretary has certain information from insurance agents which is available to players. The desirability of. the Hauraki plains Rugby Union appointing a protest committee has again been demonstrated, this time by the Kerepeehi incident. Owing to the scattered nature of the district it is not deeirabl 3 to call the management committee together more often than is necessary. Over 60 miles of travelling on the part of delegates is entailed. On the other hand, while it is not right for a player to take the fle .d after being ordered off, it is hardly fair that the hearing of his case should be delayed over the following Saturday.
