PLAINS FOOTBALL.
LAST SATURDAY’S GAMES. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Showrey weather prevailed cn Saturday last, but there was not sufficient lain to interfere with the inters club football matches though the various fields were very slippery and the ball difficult to handle. Wins were secured by the Ngatea and Turua tennis in both the senior and junim’ grades and by the West senior team. Turua won the third-grade match. Each senior team has now played four matches, and each junior team three with the exception of Ngalea, which has not yet had a bye. Following are the points :— Seniors : Ngatea 7, West and Coast 5. A penalty kick well followed up took the West forwards to near their opponents’ goal, where a penalty gave the defenders relief. After a passing rush a long kick compelled Coast to force. Play was in neutral ground at the change over. Play went to midfield from the kickoff until a break away by the Coast forwards compelled a force. West worked up-field, and another force was recorded. Coast then had a hard time defending. West still attacked. and from a line-out near the corner a scrum ensued from which Coast forced.
On resuming after half-time Coast worked to the other twenty-five, but a long kick returned the ball to midfield. More close work by Coast took them to neai the posts, where tlie defenders relieved with a free kicK. The visitors immediately returned to the attack and Woodbridge and Penny were, responsible for the first try. The kick failed. Coast madi great efforts to even up the score, and several times almost succeeded. Fast play eventuated in West’s quarter ibr the remainder of the quarter.
