WORK OF THE MONTH.
ENGINEER'S REPORT.' The-county engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to the Hauraki Plains Coun-ty-Council meeting on Tuesday as follows “Waitakaruru 'Riding.—-The grader worked on'Malinta and Pokeno roads. The contractors have completed the foiination on Miranda Road, and 50 yards of spauls have been delivered alongside metal ready for maintenance as required. ; 'Pipiroa Riding.—The followingroads have been graded : Clay roads in Pipiroa Township and I-lopai West. “Ngatea Riding.—The River road, Orchard West, and the r.oad into the implement ished have been graded. ‘Kopuarahi Riding.—The grader has been working on Orongo and Shelly Beach roads. "Netherton Riding.—A start has been made scarifying and rolling on the Ttirua-Pacroa road. "Kerepcehi Riding;—Work on the Paeroa road is in progress. loan works. ‘Turua-Nethei'ton Road.—The work on Orchard East Road is completed. Trams have been laid on WluirepoaKcrepechi Road and Hauraki Road. “Turua-Orongo Road. —Contractors have completed the first coat of metal on this road, and work-has now ceased for the winter. An extension of time hat been granted until February .281926, on condition that the contractors maintain this and the Piako road in good order for traffic until the contract is completed. “Contracts. —The deviation a t the Devil’s Elbow on the Kaihere-Pate-tonga road iw completed' and three chains of road metalled. ‘Ohinewai Road.— Metalling on this I'oad is completed. “Uikutaia Quarry.—The committee set up to deal with this matter decided that the quarry is to be immediately equipped in thorough working order at a cost of £3360. Messrs Kchcly ami Julian agreed to deliver the balance of the metal called for in their contract at 10s 3d on. the punt and 3s punting on the Waiho'i River between the Kopu ferry and Netherton. Ci - .-:. Hare and Nicholson said they thought that tenders were to have been called for the punting. The clerk pointed out that the engineer had drafted a letter embodying the agreement, and this had been approved by the committee. Councillors discussed the prices at length, and several stated that very complete. .specifications should be drawn up and iiot deviated from. The contractors had in the past asked tRe council at practically every meeting for some concession, but this practice would have to cease.
Cr. Hare said be wished it recordea tint he was against the punting price.
The engineer pointed out that, the man who had been given the contract was capable, and would maintain the pm ; ts in first-class order.
Tiie action of the committee was approved and the report adopted.
